Title: How hard is to setup and use weather34 template?
Post by: jzinckgra on January 23, 2019, 01:17:24 PM
I have my own website and have been uploading to it from WD for years (www.weather911.net), but am interested in using the weather34 template, but have no experience beyond basic web design. I use host gator as the server. Would this be over my head to try and get this setup using WD? Thanks.

Have a look at the documentation found on the 'HomeWeatherStation Template - WD Version (http://wd34.weather-template.com/)' and if you need additional information or have questions, check the 'weather34 for WeatherDisplay (clientraw and WDapi) (https://www.weather-watch.com/smf/index.php/topic,67468.0.html)' thread in the Weather-Watch forums.

Thanks. I uploaded and extracted files to my root dir, but I'm getting a 500 internal server error when I try the test link. www.mysite.net/pwsWD/

Is "mysite.net" really your domain name?

there is a special setting at your provider, as using the test-program, the first script runs OK
http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/_test.php
When using "inspect"  you will see that all but one php script is allowed to run. All others get a 500 error
Again when testing such an individual script it runs OK
http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/_test.php?test=clock_small.php
All single scripts work as they should
http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/w34_easyweathersetup.php

It seems that only scripts which do not include other PHP scripts work
EXAMPLE http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/easyweathersetup.php  has the name of the previous script and the only thing is does is load the new version, but it fails also.
Code: [Select]
<?php
include 'w34_easyweathersetup.php';
Running the included script directly works fine http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/w34_easyweathersetup.php

===> Maybe
you uploaded the scripts and they got the wrong permissions.
All scripts should have execute permissions to thew Apache user itself.

===> QUESTIONS
But whatever the cause, I can not solve it as it seems not to be an error or setting in the scripts
Do you know:
what version of PHP you are using? I attach a smal script, it displays all info about your PHP version
if your website is run with Apache or IIS
and  the provider where your website is hosted?

At least 5.6, better 7.1 or higher.

I tested a few times and it could be a permission problem as I can generate the same 500 error when setting scripts as not-executable.
Every script which when run in the browser fails with a 500 error , runs correctly when loaded using a test-program.
EXAMPLE: http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/easyweathersetup.php   fails with a 500 error
The script ttp://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/_test.php   works and loads
And when that working script loads the same example script : http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/_test.php?test=easyweathersetup.php  it also works OK.

If you do not have time to check the permissions and set them correctly, you could  email me (not  a message on the forum) your ftpserver/userid/password and I can check.

Because I am as curious as you probably are, why it is not working 100%, why some scripts fail and others not.

I checked the permissions. Read and Execute for User, Group and World are enabled. Write is only enabled for User. I went ahead and enabled Group and World for Write and it still doesn't work. When I open the pwsWD folder and see all the scripts, they have different permissions (see pic). Some of your links above that did work for you are not working now. Ver 5.6 is running

Well, at least something is 100%.
Now all the scripts end in a 500 error. Even the scripts which worked previously.

So definitely there is some permission problem, I hope you will find it. Maybe contacting your provider will help?

Wim,
See my post above yours with pic. Should Execute be enabled for all scripts? The pwsWD main folder has all permissions, but inside the folder, individual scripts are all different for permissions.

Normally all scripts have 644 with "apache".
The folders (and the contents)  to which the scrips write data have 755: ./jsondata  ./ chartsmysql/  ./chartswudata/
But your server is using "nginx" and maybe  that is different. I have no idea.
Maybe simple trial and error.
Remove the write group and write world form the pwsWD/ folder, it  should be 755 at most.
Check the  ./jsondata  ./ chartsmysql/  ./chartswudata/ folders also.

Set index.php and _test.php back to 644
Then test them if they work.

The above fixed the issue. It seems to work now, but it says my php ver is "Info: Your current PHP version is : 5.4.45" under the easysetup screen. I know you said it should be 5.6 or higher, but is this a problem. It's odd because hostgator says the ver is 5.6.30. thanks.

When you unzip the info.php from a few messages back, you can run it on you site and it will display the real PHP information.

When I access your site, it is still not working correctly.   => http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/
The index.php is only partly loaded and 12 scripts fail because of a 500 error.
===
The database-user & -password fields are simple html fields without any extra checking by easyweather.
If you fill in any normal characters, like 12345444444   ,
and press save at the bottom,
The field should contain those characters if you start easyweather again.

I therefor assume that the file is not saved when you click the save button. Maybe also because a 500 error.

Win,
A few more questions. I'm not sure I'm using the correct host name, but the credentials are the same ones I have in WD. Why does the cpanel password stay blank? I enter in password , then save, but when I go back, it's blank again.

Do I have the correct webcam link? Thanks.

Already answered in previous message https://www.weather-watch.com/smf/index.php/topic,67583.msg542906.html#msg542906
When a script fails after you hit the button, it can not write the information.
So first try with a fake password with normal characters. Maybe that is saved.
===
The webcam will not show as the scripts run in a 500 error.  But the correct link would be ../capture2.png

Looks like it's a permissions issue. I see duplicate php files in the main pwsWD folder and then again in the pwswdupdate folder. Do I update all php files in both folders for the duplicates or only one?

Edit. I updated all php files to 644 and scripts seem to be working. I went ahead and setup WD to upload from my station and got the "success" message when I tested, but still not seeing my station conditions, just the sample conditions. I think I need to provide clientraw.txt path in settings? If so, do I fill out the boxes in the WD pic below

Did you hand edit any of the files included with the distribution?

Also, your page footer shows:

Double check your path setting in easy setup to your clientraw file...

at this link: http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/index.php
The real error is Warning: file_get_contents(..clientraw.txt):
So there is no data to be read, if you meant that clientraw.txt is in the root is should be  ../clientraw.txt
But that is not correct either as http://www.weather911.net/clientraw.txt  does not exists (404 error) or can not be read.

When there is no data at all, all kind of errors and warnings  can occur. Also the array_key_exist which was checking if a certain field existed.

So for now please reset the location of clientraw.txt to "./demodata/clientraw.txt" then there will be no errors messing things up.
Then you can change ONE setting at a time => save after every change => test => only continue when all remains OK

There is far far to much data that WD can generate and upload. There is a youtube movie and a wiki about what to select and how to upload.  Then WD uploads only what you want/need.

I never had an API key from WU so I think that explains why the text file is blank. Wondering if I'll be able to get one after Feb 15. Seems like a lot up in the air.

Is there a way to use WD to provide 5 day forcst instead of using darksky or metar? I see an option in settings if I'm using clientraw, but not sure where to get the actual frcst file info from. Is it WD?

All uploaders to WU should be able to get a NEW-API-key.  But what they can retrieve and if there will be scripts to use the key is unclear.

The forecast can only come from DarkSky at the moment. You need a free key for that. The limits are also very generous, 1000 calls/day

The current conditions can come from DarkSky, using the same API-key
Or from METAR using another free key
Or WD can read the METAR for you and the clientraw.txt will contain that information.

Couple other questions:

1. why does dark theme not stay dark all the time? I notice in my web browser that during refresh it changes to the bright theme, then I have to back and switch it again

2. If I make my link (http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/?theme=dark) public, how do I remove the "Home" and "Menu" buttons at the top left?

3. Can I use a tablet to display the above link and have it display in landscape mode, similar to desktop appearance?

In easyweather you define the most used theme, in your case "dark". If a visitor changes that to light, that temporary change is stored in a cookie in his/her browser.  Some users set the use of cookies in their browser to false, so the temporary setting is not kept between refreshes

2. If I make my link (http://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/?theme=dark) public, how do I remove the "Home" and "Menu" buttons at the top left?
You can not do that with a setting. Only by changing the scripts themselves. Be aware that all other links to menu items are lost then also
Quote
3. Can I use a tablet to display the above link and have it display in landscape mode, similar to desktop appearance?
It should always display exactly the same way as on a desktop when you hold the tablet in landscape mode. It can switch to "phone mode"  when holding the tablet vertically. There is a minimum width for phone-type-devices, below that width only the important blocks are shown one below each other.
Still can't figure out how to setup historical data. Am I supposed to . . . shortened
With "historical data." do you mean: the graphs?  They get their data either from your own WU data.  Or from the data-table on your webserver.

Using the webserver to store historical data correctly, you should also run the cron-jobs: every 10 minutes plus just before and just after midnight.

Storing the information in the database-table and generating your own daily, monthly and yearly .csv files is described in:
http://wd34.weather-template.com/documentation/WDapi-stationcron-2019-01.pdf

P.S.  Now  your scripts seems to work, you should install the updates also.

In easyweather you define the most used theme, in your case "dark". If a visitor changes that to light, that temporary change is stored in a cookie in his/her browser.  Some users set the use of cookies in their browser to false, so the temporary setting is not kept between refreshesYou can not do that with a setting. Only by changing the scripts themselves. Be aware that all other links to menu items are lost then alsoIt should always display exactly the same way as on a desktop when you hold the tablet in landscape mode. In this link http://wd34.weather-template.com/documentation/WD34-SQL-2019-01.pdf, it says to import the file w34_util_weatherstation_mysql. I don't have that file in pwsWD. I only have w34_util_weatherstation_sql. I can see my table has been created in phpmyadmin but it is empty. In WD when I run mysql, it says "no database" selected. So I selected the database, but the List of Tables field is blank, so I can't select "weatherstation" as the table. See pic.

@jzinckgra: Your screenshots would be easier to capture/post and a lot easier to read if you use the Windows Snipping Tool (https://www.digitalcitizen.life/how-use-snipping-tool)* which is included in Win 7/8/10. Also .png is usually a better format to use for graphical pages than .jpg which uses data compression optimized for real photographic images.

* Now called Snip 'n Sketch in latest Win 10 I'm told...

Is this better? I think my 1st pic is more readable. Anyways, any thoughts on my questions? Thanks.

No. It's beause the image is shrunk down very small on a big canvas (the white area), I'm not familiar with using paint so I don't know how that occurs :dontknow:

not sure why you are trying to use WD's mysql program?
it wont be able to update the weather34 mysql data if that is what you are trying to do...its not intended or needed to do that

Brian,
In easyweathersetup, under historical data: "Which script will load the weather-data to your databse?" Do you know if I select "stationcron job will do database load" or "Wdapi script will do database load"

Brian,

To load your data to the sql-table on your server you use a script which runs 24/7 at a fixed interval, say every 5 or 10 minutes.
You can choose either of the two:
If you  use WDapi you can use that one. A small drawback: if you are uploading very fast, f.i. every 5 seconds, the table will grow rapidly.

If you use the 10 minute station-cron you can use that one. That is the valid choice for clientraw upload also.

Just before midnicht the second cron will calculate the high-lows of today and store a line with those totals in the Yearly and Monthly .CSV files.
To clean the daily sql-table the third cron job will delete all rows from the sql table just after midnight.

To use all, this the PC with WeatherDisplay should run 24/7 and not be restarted during 11:45 PM and 00:15 AM as some users tend to do.

I thought I had this figured out:), on my popup temp block, my timestamp for most recent temp is incorrect. The X-axis reports the wrong time.

I thought I had this figured out:), but my pop up graphs are not being updated. If I run the following script I get this: https://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/w34_cron_stationcron.php (https://www.weather911.net/pwsWD/w34_cron_stationcron.php)

Maybe your Database is not at address 162.144.12.159  Probably that is the ip-number when you look to the database from your home.
The scripts run already at your server, so most of the times it is "localhost" or sometimes "127.0.0.1"
But as I have no experience with your hosting company I am not sure what the problem could be or how your settings should read. Sorry, for this someone else has to answer these questions.
Succes, Wim

I got it. I had stationcron doing the uploads and not WDAPI. Works now, thanks.

I'm using an Amazon fire tablet to display my template and the temp is not auto refreshing. Everything else does but temp. Any ideas?

What browser? The bitsostring template site (inc. temp block) updates OK in Chrome on a Fire HD 10.
