No at all but instead Scotchlok's to extend the orginal cables. Been in use and out without additional coating in finnish weatherconditions for 8 years now with success for both my UV and solar-sensors.

With the scotchlocs, i would need 4 for each cable is that right?

Yes.

Be sure to check that wires in the final RJ11 are in the same order as in the original Davis RJ11. Phone cables can often be crossed and you don't want that.

Cheers Niko, ha ha, funny ya say that, i bought 4 rj11 couplers, they were crossed
easy enough, 1 side was the same as the davis cable, so i just pulled the pins out of
the other side and refit them in the correct order, i learnt quickly that you only get a
max of 2 goes at bending the pins to get them out and refit them.  The only way i can
waterproof them is to hot glue then electrical tape, amalgamated tape would be better.

I was hoping to find something along the lines of the Davis version but cheaper, i need 3

ok,  I think im gonna go for these (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tight-Orange-Button-Splice-Connectors/dp/B00H8R5KRG/ref=pd_cp_107_3) its hard to tell how big and do i then just tape them to the mast?

Phone wires seem to work on the "two wrongs make a right" principle, crossover in the cable cancelled out by another crossover in the connector

Yeah, i had already made up the cables though before the couplers arrived

Those scotchloks are quite small, they only need protecting from direct driving rain, so yes, tape to mast will work. For a bit of extra protection I would make a drip loop - u-turn the wire from the sensor back up the mast for a few inches so that the connectors are pointing up when you tape them.

Brill, sounds like a plan to me, thanks, only another 8 days for the mast to arrive :/

Yep, thats the way i have done it too. Of course a layer of tape around the whole thing would give even more protection but the tape-packet would need to be 110% water/moist-proof then wich is in de facto impossible when 2 wires goes inside it. The experience from my own fiddlings togethter with our wet/humid/frozen fall/winter where humidity stays at around 100% for months are that no protection at all are better than bad protection.

Well, if you really want it weatherproof   Get a short length of plastic tube (e.g. pvc conduit), cap one end, fill it half way (or more) with hi-temp silicone electrical (dielectric) grease. Mount it open end down on the mast, u-turn the spliced wires up into the tube so that the spices and ends of the cable jackets are well in the grease. Tape/clip the wires to the mast, stuff the open end of the tube with rubber/plastic foam to keep it clean.

But the ones I have just bought are filled anyway :)

Right, this is overkill for most hobby applications, but it will hold up longer than just tape. It does seal the ends of the cable jacket which is a good thing, moisture can easily wick a long way into the cable. You can also do the plastic tube thing without the grease, but where's the fun in that?

"simply plug a patch cord into either end and screw together."

"Cut the connectors off the two patch cords. Thread the 2x cat 5 through the nuts and rubber seals and install new RJ45's. Plug into each end of the connector and screw together"

FTFY

You understand how they work - right?

I believe so, 1 wire of the same colour from each cable, then squeeze, no need for removing plastic either...

Exactly  :D Try to use a big pair of pliers or a vice so that you get a straight squeeze and the colored bit doesn't go in at an angle.

Davis is now live, cable joining went without a hitch on my part, the cable grip inside the
connector broke so had to redo that one, joining of the cables went ok and 1st time too

Temp and humidity are working at 10m length cable so thats good too :)
