Sorry, Brian, but rain is still not correct

After resetting the datalogger / VP per your suggestion, my rain amounts in WD are still not matching the VPs.

I was just out for a while and my computer was OFF. It POURED while I was out. I came home and looked at my VP and it said .25 in of rain had fallen. I turned on my pc, let WD do its update, and it says only .14" rain fell.

If I close WD and start weatherlink, it shows the correct amount (.25"). So it cant be the datalogger, as it, too, feeds weatherlink.

Attached are: 1) screen shot of weatherdisplay rainfall amount for the day 2) Screen shot of WD rainfall amount for the day 3) the vptemplog I grabbed as soon as I saw this.Maybe it will shed some light on this?

Thanks!
Larry

weather link uses the total from the console, so that does not prove much
whereas WD stores its own total, although that total should still match the console total all things being equal, as long as the reset time are the same

so my advice is not to turn the pc off and not have wd running
becuase i do not know what is wrong with it for your setup,as testing here was OK and others have tested and its Ok for them too

My reset time is midnight.

Keeping the PC on 24 hrs a day is not an option. I should be able to turn my PC on at any time and have it read exactly what the VP says.

It appears to me that WD is missing any rainfall that occurs while the PC is off and it cant measure the actual rainfall as it is falling.

Each time WD loads, it does the datalogger download properly, so I dont see how it could be missing just partial rain.

Is there no way you can put in that “console check” that we discussed sometime earlier?

Larry since you have Weatherlink capturing the data you should be able to use ‘Browse the station data’ option which will show you each of the log records captured from your datalogger. You need to ensure that you do indeed have a record every minute in this display and then you have to go through these records and count how many have a rain tip recorded and add them up. Can you post here the results from this?

I think you must agree that the most likely scenario here is a problem with your setup as you seem to be the only person here who has this exact problem. True I did have one issue with missing rain tips but that was ONLY if a tip happened during the archive processing and at most I only ever missed one tip or 0.01in of rain. Now I have a dedicated PC for WD which runs 24x7 even that has gone away.

In my view just taking the rain total from the console, although fixing your immediate issue, still does not solve everything because you will not have a true record of rain rate.

Stuart:

Thanks for the insight. I do not normally have weatherlink running. I just turned it on yesterday to see if it would report the correct amount of rainfall…then I went back to WD. Is there a log in weatherlink that I might still have that can be compared to the vptemplog from WD that I posted here yesterday?>

Start up weatherlink and run the ‘Browse station data’ option which shows each of the records downloaded from the station, you will need to work out what times are appropriate for the period you are looking at having the PC off for, it formats the data but it is as close as you can get AKAIK. It will show one record each minute if you have the logger correctly set to 1 minute logging. You then have to count the number of records with rain recorded, unless there is very heavy rain it is usually 1 tick per record but it can be more. This should show if the logger records contain the correct rain info. The other thing is that although WD may THINK it is set to 1 min logging weatherlink could show different. Be aware that when you set or change the logging interval it wpies out the logger contents.

I am no weatherlink expert, I only used it initially to setup my station and prove the connection to my PC. I have used it a few times just to do what you are trying - verify the data from the logger - and I used the Browse facility. There may be other files but I have not found them.

Stuart

Stuart:

Attached is a screen shot of the weatherlink log for the time period in question. It clearly shows a total of .25" of rain.
Also attached is the vptemplog from WD, which for the life of me, I can’t make heads or tails out of.

If anyone would like to try, they are welcome to. In the meantime, I am personally aware of at LEAST one other person who is having this exact same problem with rain totals of WD not matching the VP console. They too, often have their PC off. They won’t come forward in this forum because they just got tired of continually resetting the rain totals in WD everytime it rains, and just doesnt want to deal with it anymore.

If anyone can figure it out…hats off to you.

Thanks!

vptemplog.txt (27.8 KB)

My remote station suffered two power outages and restarts on the 18th, approx 06:00 to 14:00 and 14:40 to 22:00. Despite that the rain caught up OK (Update, I don’t mean this to imply that you aren’t correct in what you are reporting, just wanted to give you some hope because it does work for other users)

OK so now we know two things from this weatherlink screen shot. Firstly you have one minute logger records and secondly it does indeed show the correct number of tips of the rain gauge.

Perhaps you could show the same period of data from your 52005lg.txt log file which will show us what WD actually logged. I am afraid I don’t know the format of the vptemplog either!

Now I think we need to double check on your settings in WD. Can you post a screen shot of your Weather Station type and settings control panel, and your Weather Station Datalogger control panel. This will show your rain gauge settings and what WD believes your datalogger is set to.

Stuart

Stuart:

Thanks so much for your help, concern and direction!

Attached are 1) Screen shots you asked for
2) The correcponding time period of the WD log you requested for that same day.

A quick look at it tells me that WD says there was only .14" rain during the same period that weatherlink recorded .25". (and those two numbers were exactly what the two GUI’s were showing (as per my first post).

Take a look and see what you think.
Maybe Brian should look at this also!

Thanks!

Well the weatherlink data shows the rain and compared with the log file from WD i think it does show a problem. I have not yet checked it thoroughly but on the one of two records I have looked at the only difference seems to be lack of rain, some records are OK and others are missing a rain tip. It needs confirming but it does look like you are dropping rain.

One thing to check seeing as how you power off your PC so much what is the clock like when you power it up, do you sync it with a tie server on the internet before you start WD? I know Brian says it is very important that the clocks in both the PC and your VP should be in sync or it can do funny things!

If you clocks are OK then I think I’d like Brian to take another look as there seems to be something amiss here.

Stuart

Thanks for looking at it Brian:

I do not sync to an external clock, but my clock is within 30 seconds of an atomic clock I have on the wall…so I really don’t think there’s an issue there.

I wish Brian would help on this, as I see nothing else I can do.

Thanks again for your help.

this screen shot shows 1.4 inches (35mm or so) was recored in that vptemplog.txt, and that matches the actual rain found as wd processed that raw data

a close inspection shows that what wd found (or should have found) in the data extraction (i.e in that vptemplog.txt) matches perfectly the davis log for rain
and so any differences in rain totals will be due to not comparing the same reset times for daily rain totals comparedwith weather link, or something similar
who is the person who does not want to come forward and say they think they have the same problem (which looking at your data I do not see any problem, can you broadstairs?)

brian:

Your screen shot, which was obviously taken from whatever data you extracted from whatever period during 5/19 does not match the screen shot I sent in in an above post.

It clearly shows at the time when I turned my computer on and took the shot, .14" of daily rain in WD.
The WD log posted above from 520.txt shows the same .14" for the time period between 8:36 (20:36) pm and 9:21 (21:21)pm

The screen shot above of the weatherlink log for the same period shows .25" rain.
The 520.txt log from WD are MISSING data during numerous minutes during that period where weatherlink does record them.

Forget the vptemplog. It makes no sense. Look at what’s been posted above in this thread, based on what Stuart (broadstairs) asked me to compare.

Don’t forget that WD stores metric values, confused me for a minute (or two).

Although the times match (pretty much) between wlink and vptemp log, there’s a factor of 10 in the values, wlink = 0.01 but vptemp is showing 2.5, I think it should be .25. I think that’s why Brians load of the same data totals 1.4 inch and caricell = .14 inch.

Update:

But if I add up the values in the vptemplog I get 60.5mm = 2.38", or allowing for the factor of 10 0.238" which is about right compared to wlink.

OK guys I only had a very quick look earlier and I was comparing the weatherlink screen shot with the 520log.txt. What I did was look at a small span of time which I could not understand. This is what I saw, the first value is weatherlink, the second is from the 520log.txt (which I hope is really 52005lg.txt just renamed!), the third value is now from vptemplog (which I did not look at earlier as I dont know the format)

08:37PM 0.01 0.010 2.5
08:38PM 0.01 0.000 2.5
08:39PM 0.03 0.020 7.6
08:40PM 0.02 0.000 5.1
08:41PM 0.01 0.000 2.5
08:42PM 0.02 0.010 5.1
08:43PM 0.01 0.000 2.5

Now what I expected to see was rain recorded in the middle column for each of those minutes (ie from the 52005lg.txt). My contention is that I should see 7 minutes of contiguous rain recorded in the log file, right now I dont care if its mm or in does not matter, the rain should be there in the log file. Now from Brian’s extract of the VPtemplog we can see 7 minutes of contiguous rain but this does not translate to the log file. By the way I agree with Niko about the decimal point in vptemplog data, and yes the total matches between vptemplog and weatherlink. But not the 52005lg.txt file!

Why?

Stuart

Forget the vptemplog. It makes no sense.
ah,no, as that is the raw data it does not matter it does not make sense to you...it what wd actualy uses, and i can plug it into the program and re run it but nikoshepard is right, because i was plugging the data in but not being set correctly as a davis VP station, the rain factorf adjust of 10 was not being used i will repeat the process with the correct rain adjustment factor in the program set stand by
