Setting Latitude and Longitude

Latitude and Longitude (and windows timezone) must be set correctly in Weather-Display for sun, moon, and solar percentage data to calculate and display correctly.

If Latitude and Longitude have already been set, but Sunrise and Sunset are being displayed incorrectly check that the values have been entered correctly. The most common problem is for Latitude to have been entered in place of Longitude and vice versa.

Latitude = North - South position relative to the Equator. Values are from 0 to 90 Degrees, use positive numbers for locations in the Northern Hemisphere, and negative for the Southern Hemisphere.

Longitude = East - West position relative to the Greenwich Meridian. Values are from 0 to 180 Degrees, use positive numbers for locations West of Greenwich e.g. the US, and negative for locations to the East e.g New Zealand.

First find your Latitude and Longitude

Many quality maps will show Latitude and Longitude and there are also many online resources:

For most US locations Geocode http://www.geocode.com/modules.php?name=TestDrive_Eagle works well.

For other areas

http://www.multimap.com/

http://www.maporama.com/share/

Another option is Terraserver www.terraserver.com which has satellite and aerial photographs with zoom/pan and Latitude/Longitude readout. For many areas you can actually locate your house 8O

Wingo has a similar service http://www.wingo.com/gmaps/index.html

http://www.confluence.org/search.php converts Latitude and Longitude to location, useful if your coordinates are giving unexpected results.

Accurate Sunrise and Sunset times to validate the settings can be found at http://www.srrb.noaa.gov/highlights/sunrise/sunrise.html

Next enter Latitude and Longitude into Weather-Display

Go to Settings > Control Panel > Sun/Moon Lat/Long

If your Latitude is North (Arctic) or South (Antarctic) of 67 degrees, skip to the High Latitude section farther down this page, for all other locations follow this procedure:

For example, to set for Boulder Colorado, Latitude 40 degrees, 7 minutes, 30 seconds North, Longitude 105 degrees, 14 minutes, 13 seconds West

*** Watch out! Most sources will give the Latitude value before the Longitude, but the boxes on this set up window are in the reverse order. ***

Enter the Longitude in the Hours Minutes Seconds boxes at the top of the window 1

If the location is East of London UK check the box to the right of the “Set Long” button

Push the “Set Long” button 2

Verify that the correct value has appeared in the Longitude display box 3

Enter the Latitude in the Hours Minutes Seconds boxes at the top of the window 1

If the location is in the Southern Hemisphere check the box to the right of the “Set Lat” button

Push the “Set Lat” button 4

Verify that the correct value has appeared in the Latitude display box 5

If the displayed Latitude and Longitude are correct push the Update button 6

Check the Sunrise and Sunset times displayed in the large box 7

If the times are off by exactly one or more hours then there is a problem with the PC time zone or daylight savings settings. If the times are completely wrong check that Latitude and Longitude have not been interchanged.

Click the “OK” button to exit when complete.

High Latitude locations

Enter the Latitude and Longitude using whole degrees only in the boxes in the High Latitude section 8
