Saying: Red sky at night...

I’m sure there are a myriad of variations on this one…

Red sky at night, shepherds delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning.

A good description of this, and why it can give a reasonable forecast, can be found at: http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/weather-sailor.html

I can’t say I’ve analysed this saying in any great depth, but years of experiencing the effects lead me to believe that there is some truth to it. YMMV though!

I can say from experience of 10 years in the US Navy and many of those at sea that whether it has scientific validity or not it sure seemed to be true more often then not while at sea LOL

…and along those lines I’ve heard it as “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.”

ever had that shipwreak feeling when you wake up in the morning?
(PM me for the answer)

Since sunlight consist of red color, a red sky at night is a delight because it can only appear if skies are clear in the west. Because weather generally moves from west to east, that clear or clearing sky is coming towards you.
