Tweaking and Customizing Web Site

After more than 8 years of offline (due to e-rice shutdown), I’m up and running. I’d really like to tweak the looks of my website. I’ve heard of “templates” available for the such. I’d also like to replace the main window ticker (with past records) with updated warnings and conditions locally. I can’t seem to find where to do that, such as “Blizzard Warning” or “Snowfall Warning.”

Here’s my site.

How good are you with web programming languages, such as HTML, PHP and JavaScript?

I am not saying/writing that you need to be fully knowledgeable with all those languages, but that you have a basic understanding of the languages and, more importantly, that you are willing to spend some time increasing your learning of those languages.

From what I have seen, your web site is only displaying the general template produced by Weather Display.

One way to improve on that page is to look at, read, install, modify and enjoy the results of the templates developed by Ken True - you will find them at ‘PHP/AJAX Website Template Sets’.

Are you in a rush to get your weather web site going or do you have the time and the patience to learn and experiment - your response will provide me with ways to possibly advise you.

There are multiple different templates to be used with your weather-program
a. Saratoga http://saratoga-weather.org/wxtemplates/
b. Meteotemplate http://www.meteotemplate.com/web/index.php
c. HWS-template for WD http://wd34.weather-template.com/
d. Leuven-Template https://support.leuven-template.eu/
and probably there are other templates also for the weather-program you are using.

There is a lot of help here on this and other forums.
Installing, first setup and adapting to your environment does not need more then superficial knowledge.

I myself develop the Leuven-Template and it also has a WiKi https://leuven-template.eu/dokuwiki28/doku.php?id=en:start as do others.

I’d love to get acquainted with the language and learning some of the ins and outs of using templates, etc. I’m okay with leaving my site as is and slowly tweak it as I am able to without corrupting the whole thing.

I see that Win has presented you with different choices of templates…

I have tried all of them, but, I found that the templates developed by Ken True, the ‘Saratoga-Weather’ (as Win identified them) or the ‘PHP/AJAX Website Template Set’ as they are called on Ken’s web sites are by far the best templates to learn from.

I am of the belief that “…if you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour; if you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn…” (ancient Chinese saying) or in more modern English “…give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime…”. Or, in my words, “…one can install those pre-made templates and never learn how they integrate together to form a complete web site; or one can learn and study the templates structure by learning the languages from which they were designed…”. :o

I started with the CarterLake Templates ‘Weather Display Templates’ some 11 years ago (wow! how time flies quickly when one is having a good time learning) and then moved on to Ken’s ‘Weather Display (PHP-AJAX) Website Templates’ some 10 years ago.

I have since developed my own and different templates but, unfortunately, I have kept them only on my home/office web server rather than uploading them to my poorly kept/maintained online server - although I am quite satisfied with the modern design of the templates, I have not been able to convince myself to put the templates online as I keep tweaking them almost on a daily/weekly basis to ‘force’ my brain to remember the languages (something that is really important/needed when one is half way through its 73rd year).

So, if, indeed, you want to learn (or get acquainted) with the design and structure of templates that can be used to eventually create a weather related web site, if you want to take the time to search and learn new languages, then, I can assist/collaborate with/help/support you.

If you prefer to install pre-made templates with no interest in learning their structure, then I will let other people lend you a (helping) hand… 8)

I started with carter lake templates when I started with WD as I was using VWS before but it crashed all the time in Win 10 and I needed the codes. I prefer white background and html5 so eventually I rewote the html and a global css sheet. Last thing left that isn’t html5 compliant is Marque. I have learned to animate text but not how to control where it displays like Marquee, it scrolls beyond the width of the page
