“i have the serial to usb cable” - might be worth to confirm if lstrip has the Davis USB Weatherlink, or a Serial Weatherlink and a third party serial to usb cable.
i would agree that trying to get wd to run on my mac has been a pita.

OK, I think that means you have the Davis USB weatherlink and need the Silicon Labs (silabs) driver. Unfortunately there are plenty of posts on the 'net about silabs drivers not working with recent Apple OS’s
but the usb info from the apple devices report mentions prolific
so I suspect he might have a serial data logger and a usb to serial convertor
