Hurricane Florence

It looks like it’s going to be a bad one for the East Coast. Today’s headlines:

Strengthening Florence to pose serious threat to US East Coast later this week
Sep 10 2018 at 12:43 pm EDT
All interests along the coasts of the Southeast and mid-Atlantic are being put on alert for a potential strike from Category 4 Hurricane Florence during the second half of the week.

Hurricane Florence threatens to unleash catastrophic inland flooding in Carolinas, Virginias
Sep 10 2018 at 11:23 am EDT
With the potential for Florence’s forward speed to slow and possibly stall, a current forecast of feet of rain would lead to catastrophic flash flooding and major river flooding in parts of the Carolinas, Virginia and possibly other neighboring states.

Reports: States of emergency declared in Carolinas, Virginia as residents brace for likely impacts from rapidly intensifying Florence
Sep 10 2018 at 10:16 am EDT
As Hurricane Florence regains strength and tracks westward toward the Carolinas, communities along the eastern United States coast have begun preparing for a potential impact.

This does look like it will be a bad one with the track seeming to be pretty much locked in place by the high pressure system to the north of it :frowning:

A mandatory evacuation order takes effect Tuesday at noon in eight counties along South Carolina's 187-mile coastline. Starting then, all roads on I-26 and Route 501 will be directed away from the coast, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said.

Last night (Monday night) during the national NBC news with Lester Holt, there was the obligatory video from the International Space Station, and the Orion hurricane hunter planes, but for a few seconds they showed what must have been from GOES East animation of full frame of just the eye. The detail was the best I’ve ever seen, with cloud rotations and very clear featurss as it rotated once or twice.

Did anyone else see that, or know where there is a clip of that online?
Thanks. Dale

Are you thinking of the one titled “eye-opening loop of Florence” about two thirds the way down this page.

Or maybe this posted to facebook

Same on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5Ou_rDZ7NI

That’s the one I saw on TV last night. Pretty awesome.

Not sure if this one on Twitter is exactly the same https://twitter.com/NOAASatellitePA/status/1039603318027444224

It looks like that one was taken later in the day just before sundown.

woa, that really shows the structure amazingly well, especially how the clouds are moving much faster half way up compared to the top of the eye wall

Yeah, great job by GOES16, must have been perfectly placed to get those shots

Here is another view of Florence.

Some web cams that you might be interested in watching as Florence comes in. The live shot of Myrtle Beach, SC is pretty eerie looking, it is completely deserted. Take that back, I just saw 2 people walking along the beach.

Pretty cool. I have come to use Waze a lot.
