The peril of trusting open source mapping

Check out the openstreetmap map in this Scottish Sun newspaper weather article (best to ignore other content on the page )

“Kozaksville” on the east coast between Edinburgh and Aberdeen doesn’t exist, the city is actually Dundee. Kozaksville has quite a rap sheet for vandalism.

Hey, stop giving my ancestors a bad reputation!
I’m sure it was the lowlanders having a wee bit of fun at the foreigner’s expense.

Uh oh, my wife informs me I am a lowlander. Darn.

Map is credited to Weather.US - is that an American company, by any chance?

The original version of that map shows the real origin:

“Kartenmateriel Map data OpenStreetMap contributors rendering GIScience Research Group Heidelberg University”

Yeah, yeah. . . Who owns the Sun newspaper?

Whatever: we agree it’s been hacked/vandalised!
