Kilauea Volcano

For anyone having interests on the Big Island of Hawaii, you can find the latest updates on the Kilauea Volcano eruption on my Volcanic Activity Reports page. I have also included the Hawaii County Civil Defense Alerts RSS feed as well as updates for other volcanoes around the world. It doesn’t look like the Kilauea Volcano eruption is going to be ending anytime soon.

I read that URL as new snow (for Hawaii?) lol

Ha! Had not noticed that before, Brian. Perhaps the falling ash is the 'new snow!.

I’ve been surprised by the number of homeowners (or now former, or soon to be former, homeowners) interviewed by the media who have said they only recently bought and moved to property in Leilani Estates 8O I guess Hawaii doesn’t have the same real estate disclosure laws that we do in California  What bank would write a mortgage on these properties?

It’s interesting to compare the evacuation areas (outlined in red - slow to load) with Zillow’s map of properties for sale.

how far from the main crater is this fissure?
it looks to be on the flank of the main (active) volcano ?

It’s about 30 km/20 mi from the main crater, but it’s closer to where lava has flowed previously into the sea.

Another map shows present (red) and past (purple) lave flows.

ah, the very last map on that link shows the original crater and original lava flows
which is not all that far from this subdivision ?

This one

Leilani Estates is by the “LOWER” of “LOWER EAST RIFT ZONE” legend.

only 15km or so from the worlds most active volcano…

Fissure 17 claims another home - just look at that lava splashing 8O

Awesome in the literal meaning of the word :frowning:

The BBC has published at http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44174455 a good article written by two UK volcanologists.

That’s incredible! And if you’re interested in earthquakes, check this out https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/hvo_earthquakes.html 2,828 on and around the Big Island just in the past month, 748 in the past week.

Hi All,

Lots of attention to our state as this volcano situation has occurred. Nothing here on Maui but a slight case of VOG once in a while. No ash as of yet. The eruption is about 150 miles SE of my location and we are kinda protected by a 10,000 foot mountain on which I am on the West side of this mountain at about 1,500 feet ASL.

See my page at http://www.dwayneyamato.com/wx/wxvolcano-hi.php and also the VOG Prediction Model on the same pull out menu.

Latest concern is ‘laze’, a product of lava combined with haze (started when it hit the ocean). It has been deadly in the past - http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38231824/with-lava-inching-toward-the-ocean-the-newest-concern-laze

It’s a sad situation for sure. I just added the Hawaii News Now slide show widget to my web page which is pretty cool but, it’s sad to see someone’s house being devoured by the lava and exploding in flames.

[size=83]Kilauea destroys 600 homes, marking its most destructive eruption in modern times

The number of homes destroyed by lava has reached 600 since Kilauea started erupting on May 3, 2018, marking its most destructive eruption in modern times and the most destructive in the United States since the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.

The number surpasses by far the 215 structures destroyed during Kilauea’s earlier eruption cycle that began in 1983 and continued nearly nonstop over the next three decades. Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim, whose house was also recently destroyed, said Kilauea has never destroyed so many homes before in such a short period of time.
