NZ joins the space race

http://www.thehumanitystar.com/
and puts a disco ball in orbit, as you do 8O

Will you be the first NZ astronaut?

“The Humanity Star has the highest chance of visibility in 39 days. It will last about 3 minutes and 30 seconds.” - oh good

yes. its polar orbiting, so very fast
there is a tracker

people have complained…an astronomer has,…siting light pollution of the sky…but it only crossing your patch of the sky for 3 minutes or so and only once a month or so
i.e no worse than the ISS

The comment I saw was not that this specific star would cause too many light pollution problems, it’s just that it sets the scene for everyone doing it. How long before companies want their own orbiting star flashing morse code company names, or huge reflective banners bearing logos being unfurled in near earth orbit, etc.

the ‘humanity star/Disco ball’
has gone
it’s orbit eroded faster than forecasted and has now burnt up
it was interesting to watch the track before that happened…it was sort of skipping off the atmosphere at first
I tried looking for it…never saw it

Me too but the sky was already light at the predicted time.

when you think about it, the reflected surface, was like only the size of a bathroom mirror
and that was like 260km away (straight up)
it was only ever going to be a pin prick of light…but that would have been flickering (as it rotated) and moving fast (took like only 5 minutes to cross the sky)

there was astronomers saying it was going to be light pollution etc

it was a bit of a flop/dud
but it did get people out looking at the sky I guess

Good point. I don’t recall seeing many/any reports of sightings :dontknow:
