I can only assume that the VIS reader is only needed to capture the data for weather display. In my experience VIS reader updates add features and functionality to the UI. Those features can be pretty neat if you are using the reader as your interface to the data or, if it is the main software for your set-up. For instance, one recent update includes fire weather information.
