Weather alerts on web pages

I will post this question here also as I did not get any responses on the WD Questions board.
Is their functionality in WD that would allow for Watches and Warnings to be posted to a web site.

sounds like a nice feature I could add to wd…have it check…
now, just tell me what is required, i.e where to check, what the users would need to set…
i.e give me lots of examples and explanation, and I can make wd jump the hoops (its a fairly well trained (or is that tamed) beast now)

I have been trying to figure out a way to trigger the event as well…this page contains xml and rss feeds that perhaps could be used as they contain the times for the event. http://www.nws.noaa.gov/alerts/

I would definitely be interested in this as well… as a custom tag. Brian, how about a default message that we can modify.

I.E. if the XML page for the state does not list our county, then we can replace “There are no active watches, warnings or advisories” with something else.

Which brings up an interesting point. Folks will want to be able to select a county or counties to have it search for.

Georgia is under a lot of watches/warnings right now…

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/alerts/ga.cap

Nebraska is not…

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/alerts/ne.cap

Right…the requirements, in my mind, would be for WD to automatically check (I guess the NOAA beta page listed above) and either post a watch or warning or both for a user defind county or list of counties.

should be able to do something with over the next week

That would be very cool!!! 8)
Thanks

I am finding that using the custom web page makes it difficult. Things I used to let WD handle now must be handled by me. Not a big deal, but these auto-adds to the web page aren’t auto anymore. Or am I doing something wrong?

For instance, the weather forecast, I set WD to d/l the file and just tick “display on web page” and it magically appeared, but I lost that when I switched to the custom page.

I can see the same thing happening with the weather alerts, without WD in control of the web page, how would I code the html to
only display the warning when there is a warning?

there is a custom tag for downloaded forecast warnings…which you can use a custom web page…that should work oK
i found a xml parser, and its working good with the noaa xml pages, so , thats the first step down (in a test program)

Well, there are two ways that I’m thinking of with a customtag… one would be to leave the default alert text blank. This would leave a blank gap in your HTML.

The other way… that I’m thinking about is by using Javascript so that it would do something like…

If warning then
----- Display some user selectable text and background colors (Probably red or blinking red or something).
else
----- leave blank

Since I would be building the HTML with Javascript, it shouldn’t leave a blank gap.

But I’ll have to play around with it once the tag is built.

Brian, I don’t think you really need to go through all the effort to build a map. If people want a map, they can use either the excellent Wunderground one (http://maps.wunderground.com/data/severe/current_severe_nostatefarm.gif) or they can use Interwarn.

Agree with you Carter on the Map thing. I was an on air weather anchor for 12 years and when the automated warnings started to come out in the early to mid 90’s I always prefered the scrolling warnings to the little map icons in the corner of the screen.
Same idea here…if we can get an alert message with the scrolling detail that automatically populates…that will be sweet!!
Scott

anyone have some good scrolling html or java code?

This one isn’t bad

http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex2/crosstick.htm

but if you don’t like that one, there are a number of others on that site.

Even though I am currently using a vertical scroll on my web page for local forecasts…I think a horizontal…(right going left) scroll may be prefered. But anything will be nice.
I am just happy to have Brian working on it.
Scott

In keeping with “KISS” principle…If a horizontal scrolling marque is preferred, why not have Wdisplay append into the existing Daily Weather Report> Weather warning/forecast input, and then “Show on web page(as a scrolling marque)”. Possibly add another check box to Daily Weather Reports to enable Wdisplay to “Auto update warnings”, along with a data source selection [state] and a keyword [county, city, etc].
For those that are doing custom websites the warnings would be part of %dailywarning/forecast% or possibly a new tag.
Auto warnings will be a nice addition!

all going well, might have something working by the end of today (depends on how long a list of jobs the wife gives me)

On this webpage, you have a lot of scripts.

the wife is sending me off to playcenter with little allister, so away for the morning…I will do more work on this when I get back this afternoon…
could be a good xmas present for people huh in WD
(and not just show the warning on a web page, but within wd too)

Indeed that would be a nice present for us!

Probably the only way the dear lady sees to pry him from the computer…
