Readed this morning many of the Nordic countries + Scotland has at least partly, if not totally closed their air space due to the volcano erupt in Iceland yseterday and no flights are allowed.
Scottish Airports are closed and there are restrictions on the number of flights in the UK airspace, just this minute they said all domestic flights cancelled but not sure if that applies to the whole UK or just the north at present. Looks like the areas affected will get larger as the ash cloud moves unless the upper wind direction changes dramatically.
Here are links to a sat photo from NOAA with a clear view of the ash cloud as it makes its way up through Norway.
The ash from the Eyjafallajokull Volcano in Iceland swept toward mainland Europe on Thursday, causing air travel chaos as one country after another closed its air space for safety reasons. Volcanic ash can cause jet engines to shut down. The United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands announced the complete or partial closure of their air space, authorities in each country said, as reported by CNN.
Currently UK airspace is closed until 01:00 Saturday according to the latest info. Friends of ours were supposed to fly back from Sharm El Sheik on Thursday evening following a two week holiday there, heaven only knows when/how they will return.
