NOAA Metar access problem

I’ve been getting a Forbidden page when trying to download metars. Does anyone know of the source to downloaded the metars?
This change seems to have happened within the last 12 hours.

Thanks
Randy

Don’t know if this helps, but I’ve been using “tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/data/forecasts/zone/ny/nyz003.txt” for my METAR (upstate NY). Obviously you’ll have to find the right directory for your location, but that’s the NOAA ftp server that I’ve been using.

Thanks for the tip Rookie. The ftp site you gave is for the forecasts but not the metar (as far as I know). The metar download site is a HTTP site but now the darn thing is working. I suspect there may have been some updates or work being done at the site.
Thanks for your quick reply. All is well again!

Hi Randy,

Try this.
http://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/pub/data/observations/metar/decoded/KROC.TXT
or
http://weather.noaa.gov/pub/data/observations/metar/decoded/KROC.TXT
The top one may be faster.
or for the coded METAR
http://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/pub/data/observations/metar/stations/KROC.TXT

Thanks for the info Capt. I’ll add to my data book for future reference. I especially liked the add.aviation site. LOts of good stuff there.

Yes, the top url: http://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/pub/data/observations/metar/decoded/KROC.TXT is much faster.

A question for Brian. Which HTTP site does the Metar Download function use? If only one, would it be possible to have an option to change which server the standard Metar Download uses?

I tried using the “use this url instead to download metar” checkbox and text box but found I had to delete all the metar stations I had in the standard Metar Download as it seemed the “instead” didn’t happen and a download of the standard Metar was appended with the station specified in the “use this metar instead…” option.

Again thanks CaptDilli!
