It appears we have some cloud to cloud lightning going on to the north of us, however the distance is unknown as no thunder has been heard as of yet and in doing a little research it would appear that a different type of detection unit may be required to register distant cloud to cloud lightning, I thunk LOL

But cloud to cloud is in some cases a precursor to cloud to ground, so the wait goes on...

The "Boss" really thinks I have lost my marbles (what i had left anyway) this time  LOL  But admits that having this ability is nice to have and is looking forward to having early warnings this summer when the kids are in the pool...

Yesterday a bust... Tonight a "washout" nice rain, which was needed, and perfectly timed as the ground temp is just starting to warm up BUT no lightning.

Should have another 24 hours of this, off and on, and maybe with warmer weather tomorrow we will see some additional action... LOL

You know what they say... "Be careful what you ask for"   Oyyyyyyy

Ohhh BUT it isn't my fault... Nooooo... It is Tom's fault, trying to test his new script in Live conditions :P     ;)

I was watching that too... thought at least one would come out of it...

Oh... I animated the tiny lightning alert graphic...

Heck I haven't had time to update BUT... Tom SUCCESS :)

http://www.jaxweather.net/

About 9:35 AM ET so should be visible for at least 30 minutes if no more strikes are recorded...

If you look now Both of the Custom "CarterLake" scripts are active...

Thanks Tom :)

Cool. That's exactly the effect I want too.... if all is quiet.. just give the routine stuff.... but when weather is active, focus people's attention on what's important.

Any idea how far away that strike was?

I got 4 hits in about two minutes, never heard a thing then about 4 minutes later another hit and then i started hearing stuff.

Up to 18 at this point.

These don't appear to be BIG strikes as I saw nothing at:
http://www.flamedia.com/lightning/light.htm

But bottom line is I had at least 8 to 10 minutes warning of lightning before I ever heard anything, AND Tom's script works like a charm...

As I am typing this more Bzzzttttt happening :)

I did get the new animated Alert image up as well now....

One other thing comes to mind with Lightning and WD...

Brian has a selectable "Email if X strikes in one minute" are recorded...

What would the chances of an additional Email Alert for Lightning, given how volatile it can be...

"Email on First strike in X minutes (or hours)"

I was thinking along the lines of sending an Email Alert if a Lightning hit is recorded and it has been a specific time frame, or longer, since last strike.   I personally think a configurable option is always best maybe in minutes from 30 to 1440, 1/2 hour to 24 hours?  But if not that configurable at least 1 or 2 hours?

What does everyone think and if it may be useful what are the possibilities Brian (after your trip that is :)  )

%lighteningcountlasttime% i have added for the next update of wd
and
%lighteningcountnoon% , which is the correct since noon...but i will have to add a new since midnight variable

re the email on first strike....problem is that electrical inteference can send of false strikes....
maybe it would have to be a certain number in a cetain time and time since last

Thank you very much Brian,

I agree there is the potential of false strikes however i am looking at it as a early warning type situation...

For instance the other day when I got the last strikes the first strike was recorded almost 10 minutes before I heard the first thunder which would be an invaluable warning if the kids were out playing and such...

It is just a WIBNI for my situation and I fully understand that not everything can or should be included in WD :)

Thanks for the additional tags,
Bob

Is lightning data shared in a similar manner as weather data, ie. CWOP or WU?

I noticed my link to vaisala.com is no longer going direct to the graphic they approved me to use for showing USA lightning strikes.
They do charge $$ for other products/notifications related to lightning using a subscription type service.

I'm wondering if this is a similar situation where a company/site gathers free information from numerious sources, re-packages the data, and then sells it.  Do you guys who have lightning detectors export your data someplace?

Hello Dan,

I haven't come across any place that takes the lightning strikes as well as other readings...

I am contributing to WeatherForYou, CWOP, WeatherUnderground and AnythingWeather and as far as I know none of those collect lightning data.

Possibly they are obtaining the information from sources such as:
http://www.houseofstauss.com/weather/lightning/lightning.html
http://incolor.inetnebr.com/rbaski/Lightning.jpg
http://www.gwwilk.com/lightning.htm

(all the above are links from Tom's site)

http://www.flamedia.com/lightning/light.htm
http://flame.doacs.state.fl.us/fire_weather/lightning/d7/index.html (This is the FL dept of Forestry and they appear to be building a statewide grid)  http://flame.doacs.state.fl.us/fire_weather/lightning/
http://wwwa.accuweather.com/adcbin/public/lightning_index_large.asp

I do provide a link to Vaisala as well: https://thunderstorm.vaisala.com/tux/jsp/explorer/explorer.jsp

Stupid lightning is all south of us in Kansas and Missouri... it's slowing swinging this way so I'm still hopeful. (That Missouri lightning site is screwed up... their sensor isn't pointed North like it should be)
