Well I sure am not sure about the use of Glue but if it is securely fastened to the wood platform a 2 X 4 (which would be close to the dimensions you mention) in that length should be fine for a 5 foot pole mounting...  But I would sure test that glue real well first..   8)

Just checked out the glue on the wooden platform and it is A Okay.  It didn't budge even the slightest bit when I shook it around a few times.  I'm almost 100% sure it will be good to go in 30+ mph winds.  Also, do you think that 1' 6" - 2' is enough to support the 5' pole with about 3 feet above the wooden post?

My bad, I meant to say about "1' not 1' 6" - 2'"

Hi again Tim,

Maybe I am tired but I am having a hard time following what the size is of the actual wood mounting pole.

If the pole is close to a 2 x 4 piece of wood then I personally wouldn't hesitate to mount a 5 foot pole on 1.5 - 2 feet of it, leaving about 3 or 3 1/2 feet of pole above the wood pole.

I currently have a 12 foot pole with almost 10 feet of it extending above the 2 X 4 it is bolted to, which in turn is mounted very securely to a 4 X 8 post...

Here is a picture... (the whole thing is still a work in progress so it changes almost weekly  LOL)

Sorry if I am confusing you, but here is what I am trying to say: 1. The actual wooden post (which will be the wooden post that I attach the aluminum pole to) is about 2X4 and is extending about 1' above the wooden platform it is glued to.  2. The aluminum pole is 5' high and I am asking if the 1' of wooden post will be able to support the 5' aluminum pole.  Thanks, and sorry if I confused you.

Thanks for clarifying :)

I would be personally comfortable with that myself, U-strap the aluminum pole to the wood close to the bottom point of the aluminum pole and then again as close to the top of the wood post...

Sounds great!  If I end up doing this, I will let you know how everything goes.  Thanks so much for your help!

Jax, I've been thinking about it, and I'm still not sure if that 1' of wooden post can possibly support the 5' of aluminum pole.  I was wondering if I could add another 6" - 1' piece of wooden post (same size - 2X4) to the one that I already have.  Do you think I could attach them together by anything else besides glue?  Thanks for the help.

I always use wood screws, offsetting from both sides, to attach two pieces of wood together.  My 4 X 10 Pole is actually 2 2X10 planks bolted together to form the single post...

I'd also recommend wood screws. Wood glue can be strong, but if I was going to rely on something to hold together under strong wind pressure I'd feel much happier with some screws in it.

Hmm well that would mean that the wood screws would have to be about 6" - 1' long...Are you sure that this is possible?  Thanks.

Hi again,

Again not sure what dimensions are involved, however bolting a 2X4 to another 2X4 would require a couple of 3.5 inch wood or lag screws and they are certainly available and if using 4X4s you would need a couple of 7 inch wood or lag screws and both are readily available at Home Depot...

Well, both wooden posts are 2X4, and the one I would like to attach to the one i currently have is going to probably be about 6" - 1' in height.  I'm not sure whether or not there are nails that are 6" - 1' in length so if you could possibly help me out, that would be great.  Thanks.

Hi again Tim,

I think we have some basics that need to be covered here...

Wood is Always noted as "Wood size" example 2 X 4 or 4 X 4, which is the width and depth of the wood piece and then length, example 2 feet or 1 1/2 feet and so on...  2" X 4" X 8' equals 2 X 4 wood 8 feet in length (at least here in the US) LOL

So based on that you have what sizes pieces of wood and you want to make them be what size?

If you are possibly talking about attaching one 2X4 to another End to End to increase the over all length then you are asking for trouble in my opinion.  If on the other hand you are talking about bolting two 2X4s together to make the equivalent of a 4X4 then that would be very doable...

Sorry, I am not very good at explaining things as you can see .  Anyways, I am trying to attach a 6" - 1' 2X4 piece of wood on top of another piece of pre-exsisting 2X4.  Doin this will make the overall 2X4 piece of wooden TALLER.  Thanks for your help Bob.

Sorry for the double post here, but does anyone else know if this idea will work?  Thanks for your help.
