WS-3600 and non functional serial port
« on: June 14, 2011, 07:01:37 PM »
Hi!

I got a new computer for about 10 month ago without real serial ports only USB. Since then my WS-3600 and Weather Display been down.

Last week I got an new serial card with 2 serial ports and 1 parallel port on. Each port has been tested individually and works OK!

But if you connect any of the serial ports with WS-3600 they can't find the WS-3600. I have tested with both the Weather Display
and the Heavy Weather Pro 3600 without any positive result of any kind. They can't see the ports. Same if I change to the other port.

The card has a chipset and driver from MosCip Semicondutor Technology Ltd called MCS9901CV-CC with a lot of individual settings.

My system is a Windows 7 64-bit.

Any who have a clue what could be wrong? Setting on in the driver to change?

I know that WS-3600 have a strange serial port not working with USB/Serial converters which I have tried many of!

Regards - Sven

does it say, you mean, com port error in WD?
what is the com port number showing in device manager, ports?
i.e have you used that as the com port number to use?

Hi Brian!

I am using comport 1. I do not get any error report in WD.

Using the same port in Heavy Weather Pro 3600 result in time out to reach the port.

What I see in the serial device manager is Com 1 and that port I have used.

I have also tested with Com 2 with the same result.

I have tested both ports with other devices with good results.

Inside the device driver there are more than normal configuration alternatives but I have
let it be like it arrived.

I am thinking little about that maybe the serial cable could be faulty. Do you have the pinout configuration for that cable to make a new one?

Regards,

Sven

Please note, you can only have one program running, looking at the same serial port at one time. In saying that, it seems neither program finds the weather station on the serial ports.  Is there a Baud rate setting that needs to be applied - 9600? 19200?

I thought the WS3600 was a usb connected station. Everything changes and there is a wide variety of options now even with any manufacturer.

Hi!

I only use the comport with one program but experience since before it could maybe be used of more than one program not shown clearly.

Any advise for an free comport manager program which can show me all information needed? Also an pinout of the cable would be appricated!

Setting of my comport:

9600 bd
8 data bits
None Parity
1 stop bit
Auto hardware flow control

Also tested other speeds and configurations.

USB connection via USB-Serial converter is not possible with this weatherstation. Many have tested including myself with 3 different models without any progress!

Will do a new resetting of the weather station console. Have done this many, many times before but with no progress.

Sven

What is the baud rate of the weather station?  Make sure the comm port and wx station baud rates match.

thats not really needed, in windows, as the software sets the needed baud rate and other parameters anyway
as far as I am aware

I have an 8 port serial card that uses Netmos-Moschip 9835 chips. My PIC programmer will not work on any of the Netmos ports, but will work just fine on the two serial ports on the motherboard. On the other hand, a UsRobotics v.Everything modem works just fine on the Netmos ports.

I think it is an RS232 signaling issue. Proper RS232 is specified as a current loop having +- 12v signaling levels. However, many interfaces will work with +-5v, and so some inexpensive devices do not bother generating +- 12v. I know my PIC programmer does not employ an RS232 interface chip, and I rather think the modem provides a serial interface that is fully RS232 compliant.  I suspect that my PIC programmer, and probably your device, is taking some "generally acceptable" liberties with the RS232 spec that are not compatible with the Netmos-Moschip chips, but since my programmer works fine on the motherboard ports, I haven't had the need to determine exactly what the issue is.
