The lightning counter passes the bar-b-que lighter test. I put in a 6' copper rod, so I know I have a good ground.
I got another LD3-R2 kit from Hobbyboards (http://www.hobby-boards.com/1wireboards/ld3-r2_lightning_detector.html). I need to get it assembled and installed.
I also want to try the iButton software to verify that WD isn't "filtering" out counts.

Now if we can just get Brian to update WD to upload the counts to a server :-)

how do you mean?
also, are you running the boltek on the old pc used for WD?
as the boltec takes a bit of a cpu hit i thought

The boltek LD-250 runs on a separate newer computer (in a different building).

I was suggesting that you add another upload  function (HTTP Post) like you do for WeatherUnderground.
I could supply a website (www.lightningnetwork.org)  with a cgi-bin script that could accept an ID and count per minute, count per hour, etc.. We could use the same ID / lat/long that WeatherUnderground uses.

I could then generate satellite overlay maps and tables.

Chris,

That is really strange that the 1-wire detector isn't seeing the lightning. When I had mine up last year (been too busy to get it re-installed) it would pick up lightning great and it didn't even have a very good ground. I don't have a BolTek to compare it against so I don't know how good it was doing. When I get back from vacation at the end of next week I throw one up and see what I can detect, hopefully the storms we are having now will continue after I get back.

Eric,

I wonder if the counter needs battery back-up like the AAG rain counters have? Maybe I have too many devices on the 1-wire segment which is causing a counter reset or something?
What made me think of it was that the XML document <lighteningcount>0</lighteningcount> seems to be 0 a lot?

Chris

The Hobby-Boards 1-wire Lightning detector does require a 9 volt battery, and I assume that without a good battery while the system may detect the sensor I doubt it would record anything...

That will most certainly be the case. The battery powers the whole front end, including the opto-coupler, but not the 1-wire interface.

Could someone with a 1-wire lightning counter that sees a lot of lightning please post a their WD XML file along with their graph image someplace on the web. I'd like to watch the behavior. Could they also describe their 1-wire configuration (ie. #/order of devices on their 1-wire network). I have two stations with counters who both only see occasional strikes despite lot's of lightning activity. Both systems also have AAG Wind device, barometer, raingauge, humidity sensor, and solar sensor on a single 1-wire lan.

Thanks, Chris

Hello Chris,

I am running a Hobby-Boards 1-wire lightning detector and recorded 499 strikes yesterday, as single day record...

Lightning detector ==> AAG Humidity sensor ==> USN 1-wire adaptor.

Lightning graph and stats here:
http://www.jaxweather.net/Lightning.php

WD XML here:
http://jaxweather.net/WeatherImages/WD/wdfulldata.xml

Clientraw.txt here:
http://jaxweather.net/flash/clientraw.txt

Hope this helps,
Bob

It is interesting that you 1-wire net is much sparser... hmmm

Are you planning on grabbing data from the XML?  If so I will set it to update, currently I see no use for it myself...

Not sure how this is all going to work and where the data is going to be provided from.  The clientraw.txt or XML which i have never mucked with...

Yes, I would like to grab the XML for a while. That way I can see what a working system generates versus mine... It's been a while since I configured WD... but I think it was just a "tick" to upload XML inaddition to your other stuff.

I could also post this to the http://www.lightningnetwork.org/lightning/ site if you like (or try to :-)
I recently added datamining of Boltek / Lightning/2000 sites.... I still have to plot their locations though...

Thanks! Hurry up and make some more lightning :-)
I see activity over the pan-handle and the NE coast of Florida (http://arlingtonweather.net/weather/lightning_java.shtml).
Must not be in your 1-wire counter range yet...
