WXSIM 2017 Build 1.0 Beta

Hi Everyone,

I’m finally preparing a new release!

Not a lot of changes, but here’s a brief synopsis

-Added the ability to customize shadowing by mountains, and effects of sloped terrain in general (on solar radiation)
-Fixed a bug which on rare occasions caused the date to revert to the start date during the forecast (I think only one user ever reported this, but I was able to reproduce and fix the problem)
-Added a notice about how to get help in the program
-Added an option to omit humidity (dew point) bias and WXSIM-Lite corrections, which keeping all the temeprature stuff. This was mainly motivated by one user whose station’s hygrometer totally failed, but I’ve seen other questionable humidity data in users’ files before, so this may have some wider application

I haven’t tested this much yet (though I plan to give it more of a workout). I would appreciate anybody who’s willing to try it out, make sure everything runs smoothly, and maybe test out that item about omitting humidity corrections. The check box for that is toward the bottom of the form that appears under Start/Auto Run and Other Settings. If you are using autolearn (or manual wret.exe-based) bias corrections, and/or WXSIM-Lite, then you could do a controlled experiment, trying forecasts with and without the box checked. NOT checked is the default state (like you’ve effectively been doing all along). With it checked, the temperature forecast should be almost (maybe not quite) identical to not-checked, but the dew point (see the mean values in the summary, supplemental data or whatever at the end of the forecast, like in latest.txt) will likely be a little different. I tend to find that users station hygrometers average a little higher than otherwise expected by WXSIM, so I think checking the box might lower most peoples average dew points a tad.

The new exe file is at

www.wxsim.com/wxsim.exe

You can use it to replace the one you have, though it might be a good idea to save a copy of what you have now.

Thanks for any feedback you may have!

Tom

Hi Tom,

First run with the 2017 beta gave an error at line 1939 i wret. Wret then quit.

This was about 5 minutes after running on the old version with the same data files so no changes. Will do some more testing and report back.

I moved a lot of .wfx files out of the way to no avail - they all looked okay though.

Didn’t try the humidity corrections yet.

Many thanks, Simon

Quick update: I put wxsim back to the old version and re-tran a forecast without any issues. I made no changes to files / old forecasts etc between attempts so it’s definitely related to the new beta.

I just ran the beta with no changes and it worked OK, no errors at all doing an autorun. Will try some more testing later.

Hi Tom -

Question, I downloaded WXSIM 2017 Build 1.0 Beta before I went to work, but got nervous and went back to the previous version. The reason is the “pop-up” help. When using something like “auto scheduler”, WXSIM does not actually open, the pop-up box does, & without click “ok” it does not disappear so WXSIM can actually run.

Does WXSIM preform normally when launched from “auto scheduler” if I am not there to click “ok”, or can anyone verify WXSIM does so?

thanks
tbrasel

Well I just started it several times and each time the help message appeared but did not time out, at least not for a minute or so. So my guess is that there needs to be a flag set somewhere which says that the initial help has been shown and is no longer needed, either by a menu option of just by clicking OK on the first run. Until this is resolved I cannot leave it to autorun.

Stuart

Same here with popup. Needs turning off once shown.

I still have errors when running so am back on old version for now.

Thank you!!! I’ll do something about that pop-up!

Tom

OK, I have posted a ‘beta2’ version, from which I have removed that pop-up message about where to get help. I remembered that I already have a (more detailed) pop-up that appears for first-time users, and those are the only ones who really need to see it anyway! So, this change should elimiate the problems with System Scheduler-triggered runs. Please let me know if there are any other issues:

Here’s the new file:

Thanks!

Tom

Hello Tom -

I downloaded the ‘beta2’ version & received the following message at the end of WXSIM Progress or near the 99% mark.

I reinstalled the previous version & WXSIM completed normally.

Thanks
tbrasel

Just installed beta2 and I will let this run in auto mode for now with no changes and see how it goes.

Stuart

First autorun did come up with too high temps see http://discourse.weather-watch.com.

Tim, strange … the changes I made were not the sort of thing that should have interfered with anything that “deep”, but you never know, and it is what it is!

Question: what version are you using? Also, if you maybe can try the beta2 again, can you send me latest.txt and latest.wxf as they exist right after this reported error? The error is in wret.exe, so it may be that wxsim.exe finished, but something was wrong with the forecast file.

Thanks!

Tom

Tom -

Will be glad to send you those items, sir.

I am away from those computers for about 36 more hours, so will send late Friday/early Saturday.

Thank you for your time,

tbrasel

Tom,

I tried again with beta2 and have exactly the same error at 99% as described above.

Going back to old version works fine.

regards, Simon

Hmmm … two users seeing that, it must be real! Is anybody else seeing that (error at 99% complete)? Do you recall if that occurred with the first beta I had a fwe days before?

Tom

Something to try if you’ve had the error that cansics and tbrasel saw with 2017 beta2: If you’re running auto run, try going to Start/Auto Run and Other Settings (in WXSIM) and check the box to ‘Leave output on screen until next run’ and see if the forecast then completes without an error. Then, click Repeat and see if the error occurs.

This is one of those tricky ones, because I’m not getting the error here! :frowning:

Thanks!

Tom

Yes, same with first beta.

Now I seem to have sorted my temps in the forecast I have put back the beta today and so far all is going well, no errors and sensible temps.

Stuart

Hi Tom,

I tried leaving output on screen as per your suggestion with beta2 and it ran without issue. Image attached.

Then I un-ticked the box again and re-ran with the same data files.

The error came back @ 99% again.

Regards, Simon
