Need help to Solar setup
« on: May 28, 2012, 05:48:18 AM »
Hi

Using Davis Vantage 2 with Solar.

According to Google Earth I'm living right here:
56°41'45.76"N
  9°33'32.22"Ø

In WD I have setup my coordinates to:
 56,41
 -9,33

Is that correct ?

I have found this website to calculate max solar value: http://www.stella-maris.org.uk/maxsolar.php

But I'm not getting the same result from WD and that site for maximum solar value.

Maybe I'm not inserting the correct coordinates in WD and/or in the website calculator ???

The result is that at 8:46 in the morning it is a beautyful morning with absolutely no clouds (see attachment).

The calculated MAX solar in WD is: 304 W/m2
The current reading: 113 W/m2
Current percent reading: 35%

Max Solar value according to the website at the link above: 521 W/m2

I would appreciate some advice to put in the right values for my location. I am using the solar reading to show current weather condition and at this absolutely fantastic morning with no clouds and a shining sun I get the current condition as "Many Clouds"  :(

Any help please ?

Henrik

In WD I have setup my coordinates to:
 56,41
 -9,33

Not at my WD at the moment but I believe those commas should be periods.
56.41
-9.33

Thanks

But I hope not, because the numbers (degrees and minutes) are places in seperate boxes in WD :D

Any one else ?

I came up with decimal gmap coords of 56.69, 9.55 plotting near Aalestrup, Denmark.

Coords look ok other than slightly different from what I posted.  Your set to be one hour ahead of GMT timezone.  I always ran with the default 5 for attenuation.  Atmospheric conditions may cause low readings but I wouldn't expect more than 10% to 20% difference from max reading.  How old is your solar sensor?  Your under-reading by a bunch, any chance your sensor is bad?  Davis recommends very specific methods for cleaning the sensor, and of course it needs to be perfectly level for accurate readings.

It might just be me .... but it's not possible to insert 56.69 in WD ????

So when google earth says that theese are my coordinates:
56°41'45.76"N
  9°33'32.22"Ø

What should I input in WD ?

56°41'45.76"N
  9°33'32.22"Ø

rounding to whole minutes:

56 deg 42 mins
9 deg 34 mins

but these minor location differences are only going to make a very small difference.

Okay,

I have checked everything, and now I guess the coordinates is correct.

At least the max solar value is the same in WD and here: http://www.stella-maris.org.uk/maxsolar.php

I have removed the spiderweb that covered the solar

The only thing no one have answered yet is:

Should the minutes be -34 or is 34 correct  (from the 9.34) ?

Thanks.

Only the degrees would have the "-".

the minutes should always be a positive number

because the minutes are taken away if the hour is a negative number, from the hour
in the code
(so if you have the minutes as a negative number then those negatives will cancel each other out, and will result in an error in the calculation)
(so I actualy need to change it so that it cant be negative, even if entered as negatve...I will do that)

I have also discoverd I was applying the minutes 2x in the code
have fixed that as well
this should help with calculating the solar % (current compared to max) at the start and end of the day (i.e when low solar values) problem hopefully
use a new .zip update, ready now
