Computer/web server for WD
« on: May 22, 2012, 04:44:09 AM »
I would like to run WD with my AAG TAI603B/WS603 setup but do not want to have my PC on 24/7.
Is there a smaller PC/dedicated box or a simple web server of some sort that you guys use?
Netbooks are going cheap these days - would they be up to it?
Thanks for your advice.

How about a mini-PC or something like Meteohub?

A lappy/netbook is a good option as it has built-in battery backup, it just depends what else you want to run on it (webcam, WXSIM, lightning detector....................).

I have been running my weather station off an acer aspire one netbook for a year without any problems (other than blue screen caused by the weather station hardware). I only run weather display on it and it is more than capable of doing the job. I only have 1Gb of RAM on board and have about 300Mb free. If you run anything else you would probably need some more RAM.

As Martin says it has it's own battery backup and best of all they are cheap to run. I run mine off an Ethernet connection, but could use wireless and position the netbook and Davis console anywhere in the house.

What specs / model no is that one Brian? I've been wanting to do this for a while, but didn't want to get something underspecced.

Nice thread by the way!

Cheers
Andrew

If possible look for one with a dual core processor like the Intel N2600 that has hyperthreading. You can get an idea of the relative performance of the CPU at Passmark.com. I'm using an Intel D525 Atom PC and it handles WD and a bunch of scripts without breaking a sweat.

I run a HP microsever which cost £129 and have upgraded to 4gb ram, it can take up to 8gb.
