WDL in WD
« on: February 03, 2012, 08:35:58 AM »
Hi
I have come across a way to show WDL within WD
i.e to have a WDL as a screen in WD itself
auto updating, from a clientraw.txt file (needs to be where the wdlv6_08.swf file  is, e.g have that in the webfiles folder and a wdlconfig.xml file (i.e you can configure it too!), in that same folder

good idea?

I'm not yet a WDL user, but I believe many would find that to be a highly desirable feature.  Another tab at the top of WD and the option for that to be the default opening screen?  I'll bet Julian would like it too.

Sounds like a good idea, it would also be handy using it in the client mode as well if you just want to display the data and not alter the WD settings.

Personally I dont see the point of adding it when you already have WD's main screen providing all the live feed of data.

WDL is useful on the web but I wouldn't see a use for it in WD the program itself.

Also your adding heaps of complexity when you add it in, as the person would have to make the config file for WDL by opening the WDL configuration window, save it in the WD program directory get WD to look at the file and then finally show it. For a brand new users perspective it would be quite complex.

Flash also is a CPU hog, I am personally not keen on using flash for desktop application development, as it wasnt really made for that.

YoWindow uses flash for its animation, but you can't have the animation going at the same time as you do some hefty workload on the computer that requires all the CPU as there will be a noticeable performance hit.

Stick to what you have got Brian is my suggestion, WD is good enough in itself.

Having WDL integrated into WD would be thumbs up  :thumbright: for me. Typically during severe weather I watch the storms activity in WDL. But by doing that there is a time delay on the data. VP2 - Console - PC with WD - To Server in Texas - Back to PC running FF. The big time delay is the upload frequency to the web server (15 seconds) and any amount of time it takes the data to travel to Texas and back . As far as flash being a CPU hog, it shouldn't be an issue on a quad core i5.

Having WDL integrated into WD will make WDL that much more "L".

I purchased the component (68$ US)
added to build 10
uses wdlconfig.xml
which if that does not exist in the clientraw location , its copied there from the default install location ( using a default one)
you can then use WDL configurator to configure that xml settings file if you wish

I often have seen comments about how much people like WDL and if WD could be like WDL it would be great....well now it can...

also note that the registration number is any 10 digit number to remove the evaluation version wording if running on the local PC like this is

also note that if you have a clientraw.txt file where WD is installed, it will use that...delete that...unless that is where you have set the clientraw location (instead of say the web files folder)

I have added option to show a background image and also added option to have the WDL screen show when WD starts up
(one good thing about the screen is it resizes nicely :) )

Julian is all for this

I think this is a nice addtion
:)

Brian,

That is outstanding, it worked "right out of the box".  I did find old clientraw files in the WD folder to delete and I expect many will.  Thanks for this very nice addition to an already outstanding program.

I'm seeing the cpu use go from an ave of 40% to 80% on this computer when it is active and I don't think that is too bad considering it is Flash.  Similar to what I see when YoWindow is active.

Thanks again.  - Jim

As with Jim, it worked from start up and I didn't have any rouge clientraw files in the main WD folder.
It took my CPU usage up to 78% but that's not unexpected.
All in all I think this is a good addition to the software and, like I said earlier, will be nice for those using WD in client mode to display the current weather over networks etc.  :thumbright:

I may well do just that budgie, use it on my housr pc as a client, good idea.
Not sure I would run it on the weather computet though, I try to keep cpu usage low if I can to keep temps down.
Thanks though Brian, nice addition

Truly "Live". CPU up about 5% to an average of 20% - 25%

Worked here on 1st try. Nice feature, not sure I'll use at this point. Have to change my units from metric.
Thanks for enhancement.

CPU use was only 18% here for me with the window open
(it drops back when you close the window)
you can change the units by clicking on  the Units button :)

Very nice, even if it uses a lot of CPU (went form 20% to 76%)

well done Brian  :thumbright:

I've been thinking of purchasing WDL for a while now but I am concerned my weather PC won't be up to the job - it's a low power Fit-PC Slim running XP.

I don't intend to view WDL on there but would it be up to producing the necessary output to view on more powerful PCs? I already produce the clientraw files to view iWDL on my iPhone.

Also has anyone come up with a way of viewing live weather data on an iPad, which doesn't have Flash?
