Trial Install - Unable to Connect to Davis Vantage Vue
« on: January 05, 2012, 01:40:43 PM »
I received a Davis Vantage Vue and Weatherlink USB ( for Mac ) for Christmas and have been using a combination of WeatherLink and LWC2 for a couple of weeks.  Both of these programs work flawlessly with the USB connection to the console and I haven't had any issues.

I really like the looks of WD and WDLive, so I downloaded and installed WD trial last night.  Unfortunately, WD doesn't recognize the console connection.  I launch Control Panel in WD, select CommPorts, and none are listed in the USB/Serial listing.  Clicking the button to refresh the list does nothing.

I have checked permissions on the wdisplay folder in \library\application support and have also delete the 2 ini files in the directory, all without result.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

tia,
bill

Bill,

Just to be sure you did close WeatherLink completely before trying to connect using WeatherDisplay?

I did make sure it was closed.  I even re-ran the WD install and Resources install, rebooted cleanly, and tried again - no dice.

I'm not sure if it's the same for a Mac as it is for Win but; make sure you've set the datalogger to run as "Serial" and not "USB" in WeatherLink because setting to USB changes it use USBExpress which WD can't read.

As I say, this may not be the case for the Mac version.

Weatherlink is not running so I am not sure how that would impact WD settings, but I will check...

The USB logger has two modes, virtual serial port, and USBXpress. Weatherlink software (at least on the PC) can (I think defaults to) setting the logger into USBXpress mode, but WD can't use that, so (at least on the PC) you have to be careful to set/reset the logger to virtual serial port and be sure that the Weatherlink software is also set to virtual serial port. The logger hardware is the same for PC or mac, but like Budgie, I don't know if USBXpress is only a PC thing.

I moved the thread here to the mac section so hopefully you'll get some more mac-literate users to help you.

UP until recently I was using the same setup as you are - make sure you have set the permissions as per here http://www.weather-watch.com/smf/index.php/topic,52556.0.html

Then make sure you have installed and selected the right USB driver /dev/tty.SLAB_USBtoUART under the comport settings.

You also need to make sure that you turn the Data Logger on under the Control Panel/Data Logger settings.

To be truthful and whilst I hate to say it there is more functionality for WD under Windows then there is under Lion.  For that reason I installed VMWare and Windows 7 and other then a few teething problems it has been running great.

Bill,

Just to be sure we are covering all the bases, make sure you don't still have LWC running, too. I was playing with LWC and WD on my iMac running Snow Leopard, and they couldn't share a driver. I haven't tried WD since moving to Lion, but I assume that this is still the case.

You don't need to worry about the data logger as niko described. Your Mac only has the USB option.

But your setup should work the way you are trying. Mine was using a VP2, but it should run the same with your Vue.

Set all permissions via link and then tried comport settings.  Again, nothing appeared in the list and nothing happened when I clicked the button to refresh the list.  So I manually entered the port ( as specified above ) and still no change....  <sigh>

It's sounding more & more like the USBExpress issue, see the FAQ section of the forum for more details.

What is the easiest/best way to remove everything WD-related and start a fresh/clean install?

Just out of curiosity what does the version of your download say. Personally I have not been able to get WD running on Lion, it will not find the USB/Serial. I am running WD on a Mac, but through Virtual Box.
