Mini-ITX based PC to run WD & Boltek StormTracker?
NigelS:
I am looking to build a desktop PC that is small or low-profile; quiet (it will be located in a study/bedroom); low powered; must have a std-PCI slot for the Stormtracker; but will have enough "umph" to run Weather Display and the Boltek simultaneously.
I found a nice case: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/cases/miniitxcases/vl52021n2ed.html#reviews
but this requires a mini-ITX based motherboard and so far I am having difficulty finding one which has a PCI slot (most now have PCIe v2 slots). I did find this: http://www.pcupgrade.co.uk/productdetails.asp?productid=7415&categoryid=545.
Would this be powerful enough? Otherwise does anyone have any alternative ideas?
Thanks
NigelS
niko:
I built one based on an Intel D525MW board. It has PCI and Serial, and a D525 which is a later generation, and bit more powerful processor than the 330. I don't run a Boltek but I think either one would be OK, given the choice I'll always take more horsepower :)
NigelS:
Well I found the D525MW board after posting about the other older board; clearly the dualcore 525MW is a better bet as well as being a lot cheaper. Anyway, I've taken a gamble & ordered the case, an Intel D525MW board and 4GB RAM. I have a spare 160GB SSD lying around so I might try that in the machine as well.
I'm currently happily running WD on it's own on a low powered Dell 11z notebook, so maybe we will have enough power to run both on the new machine.

I think so, multi-core, multi-threading, gets a lot of performance relative to the cpu speed IMO.

Nigel - where did you buy the motherboard from as I'm thinking of doing the same.
