Scottish Winds today....
« on: December 08, 2011, 03:53:10 PM »
Okay, so nothing like hurricane force but still the windiest day in these parts since Boxing Day 1998.  Snapshot taken an hour ago and it has since gusted to 83.1mph.

Yes - here's a graph shot!  The worst seems to be past now, just a gentle 40mph.

Just noticed that the gust needle on the wind dial in WD couldn't get past 75!!

Before I retired I spent 30 years flying helicopters to the North Sea Oil Rigs.  One day back in the 1980's confusion reigned up here in Aberdeen as the pressure was below 950mb and that was the lowest we could set the mb scale to on our altimeters!  Of course we relied on the altimeter for height separation from other helicopters.  Can't remember now how that got resolved.  I don't think we'll get anywhere near 950mb today - the earlier rate of pressure drop of 5mb/hr has now reduced to 1.2mb/hr.

The BBC are reporting that the highest windspeed in Scotland today was 165 mph in the Cairngorm Mountains!  The UK record is 173 mph.

Well, we had quite a nice morning with very little wind as the Low passed just North of the island.
We still had two power failures because the supply from the mainland was broken and local power station can't feed the whole island.
It came back on at around 1300 UTC and then went off about an hour after the winds started to increase and it's still off now. I couldn't even get the generator going as I have to open the garage door for the exhaust and as the wind was trying it's best to wrench the door off the house, I thought it best to leave it closed. #-o

Anyway, highest gust here this afternoon & evening has been 70 knots (81 MPH, 130 Kmh or 36 m/s), don't know what time that was as the PC has been down.
I'm now in work so the WX PC may be off until the morning, assuming we have power by then.

Time to insulate the exhaust and run it out through the wall!!!  Wait for better weather first ;)

Hmmm, anything over 30 mph here is a good blow!!  Windy will disagree  :D

I've got that in hand Graeme.
I made up an extention to the exhaust while the power was out yesterday and will put a hole in the garage door with the flap on it. Then when the power fails I just need to open the flap and slide the genny forward a couple of inches.  :D

Power is still out at the moment and the power company don't expect to start work on it until 9am this morning.

My WXSim seems to think I'll be very close to the centre of the Low again as it's forecasting a pressure of 947 mb (27.965 in) for Tuesday afternoon, but the winds are only forecast as topping out at 47 mph, and that's on Tuesday evening.

A lot can changed in forecasting between now and then though.
