TOR Analysis
« on: August 28, 2010, 07:04:18 PM »
I'm almost done designing an Access db using NWS TOR reports.
Heatmaps will be utilized along with a pivot form.
Does anyone know how to make the pivot form user accessible, allowing them to choose their state?

Pivot (AL, 1950-2009)
Heatmap (AL, 1950-2009)

Lee,

A very interesting page on your site.  May I ask how much the software costs?, I may want to do the same here in Arkansas.

Hey John,
My current Analysis pg utilizes SATT. But I'm developing an Access db that does similar. The last item I'm working is an ACOS workaround in vba and ATAN2.

I'll shoot you eg for AR using my db.

Just finished combining month/hr. capability.
Here you go.

I'm still tinkering. Rotation and inc are customizable for best view.

I'll shoot png vice gif if youb want.

John,
I really like your TOR script.
Maybe we could combine something for everyone into a Saratoga template?

We're heading into TOR season 2 (OCT-NOV). I'm trying to finish it up.

My db doesn't include current yr; unofficial. But it would be nice. Where do you ingest current yr from?

Lee,

I'll be happy to send you all of my tornado pages, no problem.  The info I got is from the SPC http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/online/.  This started as a plug-in within Hamweather when I was using that, before I began having major issues with it.  The maps are the SPC maps, but I changed the colors on them, etc.  The information itself I have inserted manually.  I check the SPC several times a month to see if anything has changed, been added, etc.

The pages themselves I believe, are in the basic Saratoga template.  Folks would have to change the image information within the pages to their website info.   About the only other thing folks would have to do, if they wish, is to change the color of the tables, etc.  I am sure there is a way to use PHP to extract the info, but I am not close to being proficient at that.  If someone was able to write something like that in PH, etc., then we could set up pages all the way back to 1950.  The only issue would be the maps.  Those would have to done manually, unless one could use the Lat. & Log. listed in the .csv tables from the SPC to map the tornado locations.  Even then, if they wish to colorize them like I have done, THAT would have to be done manually.

You can download these at:  http://sacrey.info/downloads/tornado.zip

There are 11 .php files and within the images folder there are 13 images.

I hope I gave the correct information and let me know if you have any issues downloading the file.

I'll plug what you have in tomorrow. About the only useful (IMO) graphics NWS offers are LSR and the National ground tracks. Their map db is cumbersome and doesn't trend. The other stuff is fodder. The NWS db could be more useful if they showed trends for month, hour, and strength of tornado touchdown, instead of useless graphics of cautions/warnings. The fatality graph is good too because it's a really good indicator of areas where people don't heed the wx, use radios, etc. When it comes to tornadoes, trends are very important.

I'm working on inputting a lat/long to return a chart/heatmap showing the specifics within a "Tornado CEP"; say 10-20 mi radius.

I can regionalize the heatmaps and pivot charts to make them more packagable, but it would be really cool if the webpg offered the user to select yr/state/mnth etc for the tornado pivot charts. Maybe mySQL?

I'm still trying to find the 2010 csv data. It'll probabably bite me.

I took one entire day sifting through 54000 records to remove 100s of duplicate entries in their db. These weren't State Line xings either. Just multiple dupe lat/long entries.

I haven't found any .csv(s) with the 2010 information in them.  The only thing I know of is:  http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/torn/fataltorn.html for the most current info.

Thanks.
I know they publish May/Jun for the previous yr, but didn't know if they had a csv along w/ current yr LSRs.

Aside from updating the unofficial daily csv from LSRs.

Strange. After charting fatalities, I would have thought the majority would have been during overnight hrs.
ie ALs key timeframe is 1500-1800, but OK is 1700-2300, KS 1500-2300.

the difference usually is that in the middle part of the country, the diurnal heating is gone and most severe storms lack the energy provided by the sun to sustain themselves.  That's why OK's fatality rate usually is highest from 1700-2300...
