Wind Spike
« on: July 16, 2010, 09:47:06 PM »
every so often I encounter a windspike.  Today - just a bit ago - I saw one.

The desert at this time of the year is host not only to herds of wild horses, but dust devils, the 'mini' cyclonic wind spirals.

I saw one comiing up the road behind the house, quite clear, not much dust involved, the bushes and trees were very agitated, and it headed straight for our place.   Trees, palms wildly swaying, anenometer very active.  Peaked at ~26mph, and down it went.  Not completely, well yes, completely, but followed  a few minutes later by desert wind, an outflow probably, so one of the rising clouds must be developing.   And now they've just upped it to a 60% chance of T-storms..

And it's hot and humid....

Monsoon season?

SPS (special weather statements) really don't have any criteria to be met like Severe Warnings do.  It's at the discretion of the WFO to issue them, dependent upon the event.  TSA (Tulsa) issues them for storms that could possibly turn severe, but are strong enough at the time to contain some criteria near severe levels (winds reaching 40-50 mph, pea sized hail, things of that nature).
