Not resolved.....64 bit STILL flatlines
« on: March 10, 2010, 02:40:53 AM »
I've seen several posts and tried different things but find no fix so far.

New machine, Dell 64-bit running Vista.  Downloaded a new copy of WD Saturday and moved the data from my old machine.  Davis VPII with a serial data logger connected to a Keyspan serial/usb converter.  Periodically data just stops.  Everything remains at whatever the data was before this happens.  I can just unplug the keyspan and plug it back in and it will start working again.  I've downloaded and installed the latest silabs driver for the keyspan.   It will running anywhere from 2 hours to 8 hours before it locks up.  During all this wd "runs" and continues to update data to wunderground but the data never changes. Last night I downloaded the newest weather-link from Davis,  system ran until just after midnight before flatlining again.

One fix,  though not permanent,  I downloaded the latest version of VWS from ambient Monday night,  it ran for 24 hours without incident. I stopped it to try the new version of weather-link with WD.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Brian,  I'll install and see what happens overnight.

Thanks again,

also
go
setup, advanced/misc, then tick, log raw data
then under view, WS2010/WS2500 data setup, you should see, sending LOOP data
every so often

you should see that too when it flat lines (does the data received light stop flashing?)

Brian,

I just made the changes to the log data file you requested,  but overnight the system seemed ok,  my computer reset at 3 am (aprox) (Windows update I presume)  and I started up WD at 6 am this morning. It ran ok until about 10 am and then flatlined. (you can see the data at wunderground,  my ID KCASANDI83, San Diego 92101)  The data received light stops flashing at that point.  for what it's worth there was about 5900 packets received.  Right now I unplugged the USB and reconnected it and the data started being received again.  I did not shut down wd, the computer or anything else, just removed the USB cable and reconnected. The packet count just picked up where it left off.

Thanks for any other suggestions.

Mike

I would turn off windows update, don't let it download or install updates, do that manually when you can close down WD nicely and control the process. Be sure you don't have any power saviing that could impact the usb ports.

Thanks Niko,  the USB selective suspend setting is disabled already.  I changed the windows download settings.  I can install W7 over the Vista and I'm tempted to.  I had W7 running on my previous machine and it seemed very stable.

Thanks again.

to me that points to the USB connection  being lost for some reason

Just following up for any further suggestions.  I upgraded my pc to Win7 ultimate.  The issue continues.  The frustrating part is that VWS works without issues ( I ran it after upgrading for over 24 hours without issue, but I much prefer WD!)  I launched WD again and in less than 1 hour it flatlines.  Just unplugging and plugging the USB cable to my keyspan fixes the issue for awhile.

Thanks for anyone's help.

I don't use windows 7 (and I'm beinning to think I'll wait until they get it fixed before I try), but I wonder if windows isn't powering down the usb port because it thinks nothing is happening.  You might check in whatever passes for device manager and see if there is an option to turn off power management for the usb ports.

Thanks for the reply.  The problem occured when I had vista on the machine.  I was hoping the upgrade might help.  The usb selective suspend is disabled.

Take care,
Mike

You also need sleep, never, and hard drive, never. I upgraded Vista 32 bit to Win 7 32 bit and it runs great, better than XP. Some thing is still going to sleep.

My fix below didn't work.... I made it 22 hours before it locked up......

I did 2 things yesterday,  one of which seems to have fixed the problem....

1.  I moved the Keyspan USB cable from connecting directly to the pc, to connecting through my powered USB hub. (This seems counter-intuitive to me, since I thought a direct connection was always better.)

2. Confirming that all things on the pc were set so that it wouldn't "sleep" I found the PCI Express, Link State Power Management, and set it to "Off". (I'm not sure how this setting applies to this issue)

Running 18 hours without issue so far.  Thanks for everyones suggestions....
