Narrow Screen?
« on: September 22, 2009, 05:48:55 PM »
I am wondering what the advantage is with a narrow screen or the option to switch between wide and narrow. I changed the fixed pixel size widths to percentages. This fills the screen width automatically regardless of the screen size. What is the advantage to using a narrow screen? Just wondering.  :-k

There are a lot of visitors that still use the 800x600 resolution because they either have an old monitor or they can't visually see the anything smaller and prefer that resolution.
Besides scrolling up and down, they would have to scroll left and right also if the the page is wider than 760 if you have a long page. That's a lot of mouse action for some people to see the complete page width and they may get discouraged with it.

I could understand that if the wide screen had more information than the narrow screen, but it has the same info, only spread out and the Ajax dashboard stays the same width. By changing the dashboard to a percentage, I think it fills the page better.

Yes it does fit the screen better for some.
The setting is basically preference for the viewer.
What is the resolution of your monitor?

Unfortunately not everything auto adjusts, for example the webcam and wunderground radar don't.

I played around and set my resolution to 800x600. I checked some sites that use the switcher. I did not notice any difference in how a wide-screen setting looked compared to the narrow screen setting while at that resolution. Now at that resolution some pages that are not in the template needed the L-R scroll bar. But that was at both the wide and narrow settings also.

I have two computers that are side by side. One is my weather computer and its resolution is 1024 x 768. I can not work on that computer because the movie maker is too annoying. Next to it I have a 1440 x 900 monitor that I do all my work on. After making changes on my site, I usually check it out on both computers. I am not implicating that there is anything wrong with the option, its just that I have never seen another website with it.
