looking for recent local lightning strike info
« on: July 18, 2009, 11:47:13 PM »
Hi all,

Not sure if this is the place but I've been googling and binging until me eyes are bleeding. Thursday the 16th we had a violent thunderstorm with lightning strikes very close to my house...one that i swear was in my back yard. I checked my local news and found nothing. I've even driven around my neighborhood and haven't found any evidence of the strikes. I am very curious as to where the lightning actually hit.

I've found numerous web sites the give current strike data but none with any historical data. Does a site like this even exist and if so how close can I get to my location...I'm curious but not curious enough to spend a lot money if that matters.

Thanks to all,

Will Banks

This will show what StrikeStar stations are near you.  Click on some of the closer ones and ask them if they archive data.  I do, and could pass on the files on or a screen shot of the data.

There is a Lightning Radar owner in CT as well, I have a US friend who links with him and they may have had historical data stored as one of them now has a plug-in AVI capture 24hr feature working this week. I will see if he can com aboard if they have data.  What time period and day?

Thanks guys for the quick responses...

I have tried the Strikestar site but couldn't find a way to look up historical data. I'll give it another go.

As to the second question...the strike was Thursday night at about 11pm US Eastern time...that could be plus or minus a few hours as the storm woke me up and I didn't check the clock before I went to my porch or when I returned to bed.

I did find a site that charges $8 a month and provides an vast amount of current and historical storm data ....even strike data at street level with only a 10 minute delay very cool. I can cancel at any time so I'm thinking about giving it a go.

If anyone else has other suggestions please let me know. I'm totally open for new info.

Thanks again guys for the info.

I'm not sure but I think you need to ask one of the operrators for the data.

Will - you should get contact through an LR colleague Dave Lang, he may or may not have relevant data - he is in Waterford, CT there somewhere!  Not sure how much local data or data related to that evening that he will have...

I think that NexStorm by default archives all data.  It's just a matter of operator replaying the requested file and taking a screen shot of the date and time.

My NexStorm files go way back.

Unfortunately Dave Lang has a different type of lightning detection - Lightning Radar - this is 5000Km radius capable, but can do short range to 50km as well and I am not sure if he has periodic saving of data history files - well the ability to replay any thing like NexStorm does.

I don't think the accuracy will be able to pin-point to the resolution you're looking for. Unless there's a very accurate EMF system, or you're just looking for strike totals and general ranges/AZ.
