WMR100 - Does it actually work now?
« on: June 09, 2009, 11:13:53 PM »
Hi Guys,

A couple of months ago I downloaded and installed WD on my iMac to run on my WMR100 and it sort of worked, but I ended up with a log file of some 380GB!!   :x

So the question is... before I go and spend hours trying again... does it REALLY work with a WMR100... or is it still buggy??

Cheers

but that logfile is a system log
of USB processes
not an actual WD created log
there is a thread on how to stop the OS from logging that USB info

Thanks Windy... so you think I should give it another go eh?  Ok!

Can you please point me in the direction of that thread re USB... because that was a serious issue for me.  It filled my time machine drive too!  :(

Cheers

OK - I have read the supposed fix on the link provided... but all that does is stop the logger, and deletes the growing Log file.

It does not identify the cause!!  Obviously something causes the log to expand.  Just deleting it will not remove the initial problem.

My question is... has the problem that causes the log file to expand been fixed?

its possible that on your setup you had the HID/USB set to full debug info logging mode (debug level)

Ahh... Ok... is that an option in WD or the Mac itself?

Thanks Windy.

its not a WD setting

why not try the latest version (after first rebooting to clear out OS debug settings)
if the OS still produces a large growing usb log
then stop WD and dont run it again

Hmmm.. That does not sound good.   "stop WD and don't run it again"!!!   I don't get it???

the answer is, if  the USB process still produces a large logfile with the latest vesion, then there is nothing that can be done about that, and so stop WD running

I see.  Surely I am not the only one trying to run WD on Mac OSX 10.5!

If others have it running... then sure I can too.

I will install and get back to you.

Mongrel, just to clarify, the runaway log file (growing log file) is a Leopard OS bug. Has little or nothing to do with WD. My fix in the referred post  was for getting it deleted and restarting the ASL database so it would return to normal. There are hundreds of threads on this bug in Google. The fix is generally the same as the one I posted, (which was the easiest one I think)

EDIT: This is probably the best article on the buggy syslog issue I have found and incorporates the fix (or close to it) that I recommended.   http://dans.im/blog/archives/8        although I also suggest a restart and repair permissions after you fix it, as they are usually the culprit at the beginning of the process that leads to the bug rearing it's head :)

Google: leopard syslog cpu ... or runaway system log Leopard

Most folks only experience this vary rarely, usually after a nasty crash of some sort. Apple is aware of the bug and I am sure is working on it.

All the best,
Jmar
