Wanting to replace weather station (updated)
« on: May 08, 2009, 12:42:36 PM »
I currently have a Lacrosse  WS-2310 weather station, and it's getting wore out the Sun has bleached the parts etc..

I'm looking for a new one,

I don't care for the wind fan or the teeter totter Rain gauge, and the fact that it runs of a serial port rather then usb,

I have looked at the Zephyr PWS-1000TD or the Model TP1080WC by Tycon Power Systems

Does anyone have any input on these...

Davis VP2 (with serial datalogger) is a good choice...anything else is a compromise.

Don't knock old time serial, it's still a very (IMHO the most) reliable way to connect continually communicating device like a weather station. Sounds like you've had a weather station for a long time so if you do have a serious ongoing interest I'll second Dan's suggestion, it's time to get a Davis VP2 (with a serial interface).

I would say: Davis. If you can't afford it (that is also my case) there are on the internet sites where you can buy replacements for the external sensors from the WS-2300, very cheap. Also, you can replace the anemometer with a cup one. I did replace almost everything and that works: http://www.nouveauxobjets.com/pieces_detachees.php

We've done this argument before - but I'd suggest a Peet Bros. Weather station.  Not quite as steep as the Davis, and they do require a serial port (or usb to serial adapter/driver set).  Mine's been working great for a number of years.

Well my Lacrosse has been a decent unit and might still work I just know the  sensor fell off the building and was laying in water so I dried it out but haven't tried it, Serial port is fine but I only have one om my current computer and have to use 2 one for my TNC and the other for the weather station,

I was going to buy just the sensor and the fan unit but that was 1/2 of this other unit...

I would go with the Davis with the 24 hr Fars and wireless .    Although WD does interface with some pretty fancy units out there.  If I had 30 more years and a lot more funds, I would like to try one of those ultrasonic units...

Davis has good after the sale warranty.. they do stand behind their product and that means a lot.  Kind of like buying a good car with crappy maintainence service afterward .. you want the best, Davis so far stands behind all of their products including their discontinued ones as well.. now that is better than Microsoft.
VP2, Daytime Fars, Solar/UV; Soil station; extra temp/humid station; extra temp stations; Windows 7, 8G Ram , 1TB drive/external and Windows xp for weather data.

I think we've also done this argument before Jim, but how do you conclude that Peet is less expensive than Davis? Peet doesn't do wireless so the closest comp would appear to be a cabled VP2 + weatherlink logger which is about $450 at Ambient and others. Can a 2100 with the optional ext humidity, optional shelter, and optional rain gauge (and I'll give you a pass for indoor humidity) be had for $450?

Probably because I haven't checked Davis prices in a while.

Yes, they are a good station.  But I think that the peet is in many ways just as good.  :)

Agreed, most users seem very happy with the Peet.

If you're going for the new anemometer then try to get the cup type that's now fitted to the WS2350, its product ref is TX20 and comes in at $36.75. This works much better then the fan type and is only a $4 more.

Ok well I replaced the parts on my Lacrosse for now and want to mount all my components on a pole,  Rain gauge, temp/humidity sensor and wind sensor,    is this a good idea or should i mount the temp sensor out of direct sunlight??

its best to put the temp/hum sensor into a instrument shelter
there are threads on how to build one
