Which Browser?

Serious question  , based on the new weather flash thing, and the fact it is hard, for example to make things that look good on all browser. So my question is what do you use and why???

I will start, I use Mozilla, because IE makes me mad, I love tabs!!!

And if you never had, you should try lynx, it is fun

I use more than one browser depending on where I am or what sites I look at.

IE is used most followed by Netscape and then Mozilla (Firebird).

I guess IE just seems to cope with most websites better even though it is M$ - Sun Java in Netscape seems a bit quirky.

Mozilla Firebird for simple browsing at work - cos the PC is crap

so I selected IE in the poll as you cannot choose more than one.

Accesses to the main weather-watch.com site suggest…

MSIE: 52.74 % (90952)
Netscape: 16.85 % (29064)
Opera: 0.905 % (1561)
Konqueror: 0.235 % (406)
Lynx: 0.002 % (4)
Search engines: 5.808 % (10017)
Unknown: 23.44 % (40437)

Me? I’m just a lawnmower. You can tell me by the way I walk.

Sorry for that musical interlude. I exclusively use MS. These days it’s rare to find a site that doesn’t work with IE and those that don’t are usually apologetic and busy fixing their sites to make them work properly in the future!

I must admit that Flash annoys me. It’s really irritating to be told at an increasingly frequent rate that the version on my machine is out of date and I need to download/install a new version (and shut all my browser windows down to load the new version up…I tend to have a set of 10-15 browser windows open all the time)

How can you trust a poll that shows

Unknown: 23.44 % (40437)

If that many users do not know what they use then I would trust the poll … :?:

My site stats show -

Microsoft Internet Explorer 91.16%
Others 0.96%
Netscape Navigator 7.84%
Netscape Compatible 0.02%

Which breaksdown as follows -
Netscape 5.0 97.57%
Netscape 4.0 0.00%
Netscape 7.1 2.28%
Netscape 7.01 0.05%
Netscape 7.0 0.03%
Netscape 7.02 0.04%

Explorer 6.0 97.18%
Explorer 5.5 0.83%
Explorer 5.01 0.24%
Explorer 5.0 1.62%
Explorer 4.01 0.10%

I read recently (can’t remember where) that IE is typically at 94%. Others or Unknown are what the webserver detects automatically by responses from the client browser.

Hello,

A very good one is MyIE2 at http://www.myie2.com/

much easier and pratic to use than IE

It’s not a poll. The stats are gathered by software. The stats gathering software hasn’t been updated for some time, so t’s possible that the coding strings that it uses to check what the browser is are not up to date. For example, it may not be checking for Mozilla. I’m going to turn on some better analysis software to see what that comes up with.

I always wondered if they would count things like, MYIE2, as IE, because there are based on shared cookies, history, settings, or they appear as others or unknown.
Lynx: 0.002 % (4)
:D That was me, learning to thank god for Steve Jobs, Xerox, etc... for pushing GUI. And I guess Bill Gates gets some thanks too.

I find Mozilla to be faster on this end. I have both Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox, and both are faster the MSIE.

That’s very interesting :? I liked Firefox but it was really slow for me when I tried it, I’ll re-install and give it another shot.

On a related topic, seems like I’m seeing more and more popup type ads that evade the Google blocker :frowning:

Firefox looks interesting and I might be persuaded to use it in preference to IE when it hits version 1.0. Not surprisingly for v0.8 it has a few buglets at the moment. I tried a nightly snapshot after the ‘real’ v0.8 and it seems to have improved, so I’ll keep watching it.

I have also noticed that mozilla's built in (why IE, the only browser without a built in pop up blocker, i will never know) pop-up block is starting to miss some. Some one must have come up with some new tricks. :bazooka:

I use Mozilla Firefox exclusivly.

While I use windows as an OS, I use 3rd party software for everything else. Eudora for mail, Agent for news, etc.

If you use Windows XP the next service pack (SP2) due out in a couple of months, will have a pop up blocker for IE. What’s really irritating me though are the sites that use Flash adverts which sit on the top of the page and stay there even if you scroll. The only solution appears to be to disable Flash.
