Serial or USB adaptor?
« on: November 19, 2008, 09:38:12 PM »
Is there any advantage, when setting up a 1-wire system, of using the usb or serial adaptor for linking to the computer?

depends on how much power your pc's motherboard puts out the serial port compared to the USB port

I've had better results with the serial adapter than the USB adapter. The Link adapter also is more reliable than the Maxim adapter. This link will give you info on both the Link adapter and the Maxim adapter, both serial and USB.

I've had good luck also using the serial adapter with a serial to USB adapter due to limited serial ports.

Cheers

Yep a big thumbs up for "the link" far and away better that the standard serial adapter.

A UK link for "the link" http://www.homechip.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=29&osCsid=b9c94be32d8e48a5a4cd35abe56fda81

I went USB and it has been stable ever since I set up my system. Advantage is that I can use the adapter with my notebook for testing. --Hans

Hi all,

Just to note, the USB adaptors work better when connected to a USB2 interface. I had numerous stability problems with WD either locking up or the interface would just stop communicating. Once I installed an in expensive USB2 PCI card, everything settled down.

It appeared to be a bandwidth issue with USB 1.1 that cases these lockups that I was experiencing.

Agree with Derek's thoughts and others who back the Serial adaptors. I ditched my USB adaptor and now use "The Link" on my main 1-Wire Weather bus and 2 seperate 1-wire Serial adaptors on other seperate 1-wire networks (home automationa nd temp monitoring). Never had any problems with the Serial interfaces.

Derek - good to see you back ... :D

Hi all,

Thanks Macca give me a call some time.

Just to note, I published a responce some time ago to a similar question, it is worth noting that 1-wire USB adaptors do not supply voltage/current for 1-wire device on the bus and that serial adaptors can only supply 5V about 50-100mA to a 1-wire bus network.

Personally I have had better success with USB but others may have had better success with Serial.

As I wrote earlier, I have had no problems with the USB interface. But only after I installed the power injector in my network I did get rid of those "weird" spurious readings. Even passive DS18S20 sensors had problems, but not ever since. HTH,
