I loose data because during the night WD for Linux freezes.
« on: September 24, 2009, 03:35:38 AM »
Three days ago I have switched to Ubuntu because on Windows I experienced continuous crashes and spontaneous reboots of system, I hoped to solve my problems but now I'm more desperate than before. My difficulties are becoming everyday more and more annoying. For two consecutive night Weather Display has frozen a few minutes after midnight and even today I woke up in the morning and discovered that I've lost data. I had no system crashes and no spontaneous reboots like on Windows XP, nor WD crashes. The program is still opened but it stopped working at 0:06 a.m.

Naturally I'm really really sad, now. Is it because I'm using a trial? Could it be a conflict with a java sender that I use to send dailylog.txt on a national network ( http://www.meteonetwork.it/rete/googlemaps/ )? Could it be a problem with serial to usb adapter, that I use because I have a serial datalogger and only usb ports on my BRAND NEW Asus Eee Box? This is the first week of WD for Linux's trial, I've got one month to decide if purchase it or not, but - frankly speaking - at the moment I'm definitely unsatisfied, sorry. But I'm not saying that the problem is WD, perhaps is my pc... Anyway, how can I solve all this? I'm thinking to buy another serial to usb adapter, I really feel like that's the point.

A good quality serial-to-USB with the most up to date drivers should work fine.
Failing that, what about a serial PCi card, then you can do away with the serial-to-USB and connect the data logger direct?

You shouldn't actually loose any data at the data logger on you VP2 will have it stored and then you can just download it into WD when you re-start, assuming that you have that set up in WD.

Since this new PC persistently crashes under both Linux and Windows I would be thinking more hardware than software...

Unfortunately the weather station is not at my home. I can't go there everyday.

In Windows XP the OS used to reboot spontaneusly, in Linux the OS works ok, only WD freezes (no system crash).

Even last night it froze at 0:05 a.m.

Quite weird, don't you think? The time is always the same.

But you have a serial datalogger don't you?
If you think it's related to this issue (and I don't think it will be) is there anything close to the console that would cause RF interference at just after midnight? Maybe a heater, air con or light that switches on at that time?

Have you tried running Weatherlink, instead of Weather Display, for a day or two to see it does the same thing? That would at least tell you if it's software related or not.

The article I linked before says:

"This issue applies in the main only to the USB version of the Weatherlink data logger (6510USB), although it can occasionally also be encountered with serial port WL loggers connected to a PC's USB port via an external serial-to-USB adapter. The classic symptom here is that the logging system will perform perfectly well for a period, eg just 30 minutes in bad cases, but typically ranging up to many hours or days, but then communications with the WL logger will be lost.

My Eee Box is brand new, I can't believe it's a hardware issue.
Plus, at midnight nothing special happens close to my console.

I don't think that Weatherlink works on Linux. Am I wrong?
Anyway, I can format my pc again and see what happen on Windows XP. For sure I'll try to connect my Davis to another pc. First I'll check it with serial port, and after using serial to usb adapter. That's the only way to discover if my theory is right.

That's why I said in my first post:

You're correct that Weatherlink doesn't work with Linux, only Windows & Mac.
