Hi, I to have had problems with my usb set up, flat lining, computer reboots on its own & some times I have to push & hold the main power switch on the computer to shut it down! its the only way to shut it down  & then restart it, now on my second usb cable this one is a belkin with one ferrite core I clipped on the computer end, it worked for about 5 days then started to drop out again/lock up, I have now put one core at each end of the cable & fitted one to the mains power supply for the consul at the pug end, it has been running now since Sunday night  OK also have tin foil wrapped around usb plug at consul end, but if keep watching the data quality box it sometimes flashes red ?,any way I hope I have fixed it now with all the ferrite cores only time will tell.

Make sure you've also got the most up-to-date drivers: https://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx

Hi, I thought I had the latest driver, followed your link & found I did not, it had been running for three days with no problems but I shut it all down to download new driver & update WD to build 34 from 33, I Will see how it goes.
  many thanks.

Thanks people for clarifying the types of problems they are having, that has been really helpful, since now I know it is possibly a part of the problem. For now I have unplugged the power supply and am running on batteries. I will try that and if it lasts 4 weeks I think I will say that its the same problem, after that I might try toroids and better usb cables. Definitely sounds like something Davis should really address properly.

I do not understand. If you have a serial logger and computer has serial port what is the reason for using a USB adapter? From what I've been reading there is fewer problems with serial loggers. What am i missing? Is there even fewer problem using serial logger but suddenly when cable arrives at computer you swap to USB?

Many Happy Weather Changes,

Serial logger connected to a serial port is the most reliable. But if the PC doesn't have a serial port then using a serial logger with a good quality serial/USB adaptor has proven more reliable for some users than a usb logger. That combination is commonly recommended to users who cannot otherwise resolve the "usb problem" and have no available serial port.

I've probably been posted to the wrong forum, so hope this is the correct one.  My Keyspan USB-Serial Converter has the FTDI driver automatically loaded by Windows 7.  This may be my problem with the frequent blue-screens-of-death and WD lockups I've been having the past few weeks.  I got a new computer the end of this August and have had 7 BSOD and as many or more WD lockups since September 6th.  I've tried to update the driver but not sure which one to use - a Prolific one or one from the Keyspan site for a Windows 7 PC (although the Keyspan one does not assigned the driver to the Ports category).  I'm trying to make this work for the Keyspan since it seems to have good reviews as a USB-Serial Converter.  I ordered and received a Digi Edgeport/1 USB-Serial Converter, but haven't tried it yet.  If anyone knows how to install the correct Keyspan driver as a Port driver, please let me know.  I've been searching weather-watch and google with no luck.  Not even sure which chipset the Keyspan uses.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  With my previous PC with Windows 7, I did have a few lockups but NO BSODs.  Once, I had WD running continually for over 1 million data receives before I had to reboot for another reason.

How did the Digi Edgeport/1 USB-Serial Converter work? Did you try it? I"m having similar problems after switching to a new laptop with Windows 7. Never had the problem with my FitPC Slim running XP.

Thanks,
Steve
