Henrik,

Just tried your page and it looks great. Just for your info I use an AT&T Tilt with HSDPA/GSM service, it loaded in about four seconds and the graphics are even better. I have mine working too (http://www.branfordfire.com/weather/wapindex.php) but without those great graphics, looks like something to play with!

Nice work!

Jack

Hi Jack and your other great members

Thank you very much for the fine words.

I hope some more will test it on their mobile phones - in my stat page I can see that most have checked via their PC webbrowser.

Best regards,

Henrik

Chris.......I don't think BitPim works with the E815 as far as hex editing.  Unless of course you have already done it in which case I'm talking through my hat.  d'oh!  Anyway there are a number of Monster Flashes to flash Motorola's from various carriers to Alltel firmware which seems to be the most desirable and since most other CDMAs from other carriers are crippled in some way (especially from Verizon).  If you've done that then my respects because I wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole 'cause "bricking" my phone is not an option. YMMV

Hello Jack.....I was thinking about it and may add a link somewhere on my site, at least then my local visitors could take advantge if they desired to do so via their cell. I agree also ..another Great Script by Jim and Much Appreciatted for sharing with Us..Thanks,..Chris

I think that's how most people are finding my PDA/Cell page. I put a link in my top horizontal menu bar to it. Like most of my weather site, I did the cell phone page for me, and I use it a lot, both on my Axim and my cell phone.

But once I let my users know about it, through my blog and by putting the link on my home page., they started using it as well.

You are probably right Chris but with the recent proliferation of the "iphone" etc maybe people will be looking for a wap site in their area. Besides like you have already done it's fun to play with! I guess the question would be does anybody do a search for "wap weather"? Anyways I'm glad the subject has bee revisited it is a cool script, thanks Jim!!!

Jack

I had an inquiry through my Contact page just this week from an LG cell phone user, who was searching for cell phone tide info and found my site. I don't think most phone users would know to search for WAP or WML.

Thanks for the tip. Using it the way it is isn't TOO bad. I hit the browser, then when the Verizon page comes up, I hit 9 for Favorites and then 1 for my cell page and there it is. Still takes longer than it should, though. We don't have EVDO here yet.

I pretty much do the same but do have active EVDO pretty much all over the US.  Alltel uses other providers towers where they don't have native coverage. I haven't had to use non-EVDO for internet on my phone in a l-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ng time.  Using the sidebar page is pretty slick.  I took the header logo off and reduced the size of the category header fonts.  Trick wicked!

Wow, it's good to see folks finding this of use.  Bashy, it's unfortunate, but I hard-coded those in so you'll have to fix them in the source.  You also have ticked to include those symbols in the tag output (and I don't), so they show up in the tags too.  I think if you just delete the ones that I have in there, you'll be all set.

Gotta love Google! Last night I finally finished this page, changed some meta data and today typed in "Branford Wap Weather" into google and it came up as the first site! So who knows maybe this will be of some value to others.

Hello slowweather,....the way you are doing seems fine. I wouldnt bother with bitpim or any hexediting then.

(Note to LULU about the bitpim/hexediting:  bitpim is the program needed to get files from the cell, and then one would need a hexediting program to edit the file seperately. I needed to do this on my New LG vx8350 in order to set up a few things to my liking, and must say 'Hex editing wasn't simple if you have never done it before, but I figured it out. you also need the USB Data cable to connect the cell phone to your PC in order use Bitpim)

Hey Chris........BitPim does Bluetooth if your phone is supported by those authors.  Also Motorola can use Motorola Phone Tools which shows the files in hex.  Don't know about LG phones.

Probably OT but, as previously noted, I had an inquiry this week about tide pages for cell phones. (It was really out of right-field, in that the query came from someone in Florida, and I'm in California. He found me through a cell phone/tide search.)

In any case, I already had xtide on my server making a PDA sized tide chart for a local port, but not one sized for a cell phone. Using php to resample that image down made the text unreadable, so I set xtide to making a tide chart sized for cell phones.

Unfortunately, my Moto E815 doesn't display PNGs as produced by xtide. So I threw a little PHP at the problem to convert the png to a jpg.

The site name for the port is longer than the image is wide, so next I need to code the php script to paint out the top line with blue and add a different title.

Now, when we go to the beach for Date Day breakfast, I can check the tides on my cell phone.

PDC (pretty darn cool).

Henrik,

You should be able to do that, but you'll be limited to displaying the data that is contained in that file (or add to it).  You'd have to have wddata.php read in testtags.txt rather than wddata.txt then edit to get the right data in the right place in wapindex.php.  I chose to generate a separate file so the various routines that I use on my web site wouldn't collide when trying to access the data.

- Jim
I modified the script somewhat to utilize the generated testtags file here.  If someone could check out http://southerin-ny.org/wapindex.php along with the Graphics, Forecast pages to see how it works on a cell phone I'd be grateful.   Rolling Eyes

I've attached a zip file of my configuration as wap.zip if anyone is interested.  You might need to add some tags your testtags.txt/php file in order to make it work 100%.

* wap.zip (8.11 KB - downloaded 92 times.)
