Printer error (run time error 482)
« on: July 12, 2007, 09:33:34 PM »
I am trying to move my WXSim installation to a different PC and having installed the demo and then copied over all the folder data WXSim will not start because of the above error. Now this PC does not have a printer installed and is never likely to as it has none connected. How can I get past this error and get WXSim up and running?

Stuart, a search for that error shows that several programs require a printer to be installed.  Maybe because you can print out WxSim info it's looking for a printer driver???

Do a search on Google and you'll see more.

Yes I saw that thread but I was hoping that I did not have to install something which will never be used. I just dont think it right that just because you CAN print from a program that you HAVE to install a printer, if you dont use the print function it should not require a printer. I was hoping Tom might come up with another solution.

I've now installed a generic printer and WXSim starts up OK. This still bugs me as I dont think I should have to do it!

Hi Stuart,

Yes, I've heard of this one a few times over the years.  You do need to have a "printer installed" (really just meaning a generic one declared by going to Control Panel/Printers and Faxes, and declaring one, I think).

This is one of those things totally beyond my control.  Visual Basic and/or however it's interfaced with Windows apparently thinks that if there's a print command anywhere in a program (and I certainly want to keep printing options available), it had better make an error of it, even if you didn't try to print!  Thankfully, it has an easy solution, but I agree it's kind of goofy.  Maybe there was a good reason for it somewhere, sometime.

Hope that helps!

Tom
