So it looks like people have had success with this camera:

http://cgi.eBay.com/OLYMPUS-C-4000-C4000-4MP-DIGITAL-CAMERA_W0QQitemZ260079129145QQihZ016QQcategoryZ107897QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I would really like to try this project.  Anyone think this is a good price?  I know I would have to add ac adapter.  Another question I had does anyone know if the software would run on win98?  I have an old PC that I would totally dedicate to managing this process.

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan:

After seeing your post, I set up some eBay tracking software that I have to watch for C4000 cameras.  I thought I might be able to help you find a good one.  Here is the results of the watch (click to open picture):

The capture was taken about 6:00pm EST today.  You can see the eBay item numbers and how much the cameras were sold for (for auctions that have ended).  The notepad icons are just the auctions I thought were good.  I hope this is helpful.

Darrell,

I've really got to thank you for bringing this subject up.  Click on my sig below and you'll see what I've been able to get done in a day.  Now to work on some animation.  Hardest part was waiting for the camera to arrive.  Same cam as yours off of EBay.  Thanks again.  - Jim

Great Picture!  So was this with the C4000z Olympus?  Did you have to pay a lot for the camera?  I am really considering doing this!

You just can't beat a decent digital camera picture - very nice. Must be time to update my trusty Canon A200 to something with a few more pixels  :)
Cheers, Colin.

Yes, that's the camera although I suspect many of the others will do just as well.  I got a "Buy it Now" on EBay for $80 because I didn't want to mess around.  I see others doing much better in the auctions.  Had to get an AC adaptor, but for less than $100 I've got my weather cam and it was fairly painless.

Under low light conditions it auto-adjusts to a "setable" level that I've had to tone down so you can tell it is night out there.  It takes 5 snaps to make this decision, so based on previous posts about life expectancy I'd better look for a backup.  Actually I'm sure there's a better way to set it up with all the options the software allows.  - Jim

I've been putting this off because of time issues.  Your photo just put me over the top.  THIS weekend I'll have a webcam like this one ](*,)

Great picture.....like someone said hardest part is waiting for the camera I bought to arrive after a purchase on eBay.

Seems to me we need a way to avoid bidding against each other.....

When mine is up and running, I'll send a link.

Jim,

It looks great!  I wish I had a view like yours. All I get to look at is the neighbors houses. :(

If you are serving the image yourself, you may wish to offer a higher resolution version as well. It would be nice really look close at your image.  Click on my image, and you can see what I mean: http://itsyourweather.com/cam.html

Your right!  I have already thought about that - especially since I am looking for a backup camera, and just one to play with.  Using a laptop, I would love to try to capture some wildlife at night, maybe plants growing in time-lapse, & other fun stuff.

Maybe we should start a new thread and leave the auction number we are bidding on?

I don't think it would be a good idea to use this forum for that purpose.

Thanks to a fellow name Bill Wesphal, the above link is a doc file that contains screen captures of Bill's VM95 setup.

For new users this is a big help.

I asked Bill if I could share it on this forum and he was more than willing.

As it helped me I hope many of you find it useful.

Here is another high-res cam I found. Not sure what software or camera is being used, but I like the view...
