Securing a weather station?
« on: December 09, 2006, 10:00:35 AM »
Just bought myself a vp2 here in the UK. Now with UK prices being double that of the US, I'm wondering if people have got any suggestions for ensuring it doesn't get stolen?

I'm planning on mounting the ISS 4' above the ground as recommended, with the anemometer going above the roof.

So obviously don't have to worry about the anemometer, but the ISS what I'm concerned about.

So any ideas? Also anyone know if insurance companies cover them if they do get stolen?

I suspect you're more likely to suffer from vandalism than theft. After all the ISS isn't much use without the anemometer and console and they won't be as easy to steal.

I would imagine with the ISS being secured to the pole you are mounting it on counts as being secure, versus leaving your lawnmower up near the open front gate, then I think (and I'm not a insurance assessor), that your normal household theft insurance should cover it.

I recommend you ask your insurance broker his opinion if you need to cover it separately.

Theft of the ISS/rain gauge is less likely than vandalism, but if your ISS is in the backyard then you're not likely to have it vandalised by itself, let alone stolen without going for your anemometer, console, attached computer, etc. :)
