Stan,

I have read that the max distance was 16 feet for regular USB cables and mine uses a 6' cable from the web cam then a 16' active USB extender and then a 10' passive and works...  FWIW.

Bob,

I suspect that my configuration was too long for only one active USB cable.  I used the 6' from the camera to a 10' passive then to an active USB cable then to a 10' passive for a total of approx. 41'.  Camera to computer did not agree so maybe I could have used another active cable and did away with one of the 10' passive.  I decided to go with the CAT5 method and maybe extend the camera to a different location that may take it further away from the computer.  CAT5 cable is relatively cheap way to go.  With the USB to CAT5 adapter, theoretically could go approx. 150'

Thanks for your configuration.

Yeah I would think that extra 10 footer did you in :(

Glad you found a solution.  I do like the USB CAT 5 extenders however the cost was more than what I needed for my setup as I only needed the one active cable extender...

I've got mine on a 100' cable and it works fine.  Scared myself when I first hooked it up and it didn't work.  Found that I had not shoved all the wires all the way into the connector on one end.  After I replaced the one connector it came up fine.

I had a bit of scare too.  Eyes are getting tired or something.  When crimping the RJ45 connector on one end, I mixed up the green and the blue pair.  Good thing that the cable tester did its work.  Plugged in the circuit to the computer and it came up with no problems so far.

As I mentioned ealier, gotta do some tweaking on the setting for the camera.  Hope that the WD webcamcapture program will have stuff to tweak with.

Thanks again for all the info on this thread.

Thanks Brian for the info.

In the Camera Settings it takes me to a Properties window and there are a lot of possible settings. Guess that is independent of the Video Settings. Do they inter-react with each other somehow?   I tried to play with some of the settings but still I get a washed out sky scene.  The fore ground is not too bad.  What are your recommendations for a basic start for the VX6000? I guess that when the sun is shinning in the early morning hours, it gets pretty bad with the reflection off the glass window.  Will have to figure out some way to shade the camera or the reflections on the glass window.

i shifted the brightness, and contrast, and set the outdoor on, option
also you can take off the white balance auto, and shift the white balace (both) to the left
but then that makes for strange colours, but at least you see more detail

but, despite recommendations, which might have been from people is lower light condtions, the microsoff vx6000 does get washed out by bright sky conditions i have found...:(
otherwise everything else is good abou it!

Thanks again Brian for the info and some basic settings for the VX6000.  I hope that I will have a chance to play around with it today as time permits.  Got a busy day today with dentist appointment and baby sitting chores. Sun is just coming up now (6:25 AM HST) and don't know if there is enough light to make adjustments for now.
