No Wind/Rain on LaCrosse
« on: August 25, 2006, 05:43:24 PM »
On a LaCrosse WS2317, I'm not getting the wind or rain data anymore. Temp and hygro are working, though. I had been working on a wireless setup, but today ran a direct cable, and still no wind/rain.
It was working fine (wirelessly) until a huge storm night before last. Got up in the morning, and - Surprise! No rain, no wind gusts! Checked the data log, and it showed a sustained 5 mph wind for three hours, then 2 mph for 1/2 hour, then nothing. No indication of the storm at all, and no rainfall ever recorded.
I'm powering the base station with the DC converter and battery backup; the circuit breaker for my home office tripped during the storm (reason unknown), but the batteries were still good and powering the unit.
I've tried unplugging and replugging the wind and rain cords into remote; synching the two units; restarting the base station; replacing remote's batteries; powering down both units for about 45 min. and restarting; checking cables on the roof for breakage; and as mentioned, hooking up direct cable [not necessarily in that order].
As usual, LaCrosse tech support hasn't responded from yesterday morning's inquiry. Should I just get a Davis VP2?
Anyway, anybody have any thoughts?

I have the same station.  Yep you should get the VP2.  Only wish I had.  Possible that static got it??

I suppose it could've been static. I just read in the paper there was a lightning strike in that storm about 6 blocks from here. But why only the Wind/Rain display, and not the Temp/Hygro?

How far away is the wind sensor, how far was the rain bucket?

I am always getting false readings.  Lacrosse tells me that they used crummy cables and they need to be replaced.  They offered to replace one if I wanted to part with the setup for a few months.

They're both roof mounted, about 15' for rain and 35' for wind from the remote sensor.

Yes, they've already replaced the cable from the base to the serial connector last spring after going round & round with them. Finally sent it all in, & they replaced within a few days.

Maybe I should bite the bullet and send it all in #-o

Common problem with this station is that the connections are not weather protected, so a lot of humidity in your parts will corrode the connections, try cleaning them and see if they go again. Also if the cables that come out the temp/hum sensor are loose and they move due to wind they might have broken inside the connector, they have to be tided up very close.

Just in case anyone needs it, here's LaCrosse's suggested solution (it didn't work for me; I still need to try the cleaning that PinkPanther suggested above).

It is likely you had a close lightening strike that took out your sensors. when going from wireless to hardwired, you need to Pressure/Wind retart again.

Please attempt the following restart procedure:
1. Remove batteries from the thermo-hygro (outdoor) sensor, then disconnect and reconnect the sensor
cables. Please be sure they "click" into place.
2. Wait at least 1 minute, and reinsert the batteries. Be sure to use a new, quality alkaline battery (heavy duty and rechargeable types should be avoided)
3. Return to the base station and press and hold the PRESSURE and WIND buttons on the base station until you hear a beep (10-15 seconds). Do not press any other buttons for AT LEAST 30 minutes while the station completes its startup sequence.
If the problem continues, please contact www.greatbigoutlet.com to purchase sensors.

i know it may sound a bit obvious, but i had a no wind problem for a while after massive downpours, i discovered that if i stuffed up the tubing where the wire comes out with bits of wd40 soaked sponge then that solved my problem :)
as for the no rain, the thing that went on mine was the reed valve (i think it is called) ... if you manually tip the thing can ou hear it clicking?
