Wrong temperature readings! (station on roof)
« on: August 14, 2006, 09:52:47 PM »
I have a Vantage Pro 1 Weather Station install in my roof. I guess that the white base is a radiation shield, and that suppose to regulate air temperature. However, I notice temperature readings 6 degrees + of the real temp. I tried calibrating the temperature subtracting 6 degrees, and that help me with my high temp. values, but in nighttime the low temp now seems too low... What do you reccommend me to do in order to get the real temp values?

It's installed IN your roof  8O

If that's a typo and you mean ON your roof, then what type of roof, flat or pitch, and material? How high above the roof surface is the VP mounted?

Where are you located? Nice to add that to your profile, helps to answer Q's like this one.

on or in the roof is not a very good place to put a weather station
over a grassy area away from buildings or trees is the best place, if you can
but the windspeed you want on the roof or on a pole

Well first, thats not a typo. My primary language is Spanish not English. But I have the luck to understand and write both languages.

Regarding my problem, my station is located on a concrete roof which obvioulsy enhances radiation and will make temperature readings higher than normal. However, the temp. sensor is inside the radiation shield that in my understanding regulates temperature readings. My roof is around 20 ft above the surface.

Any thoughts?

you cant compensate for a wrong placement like that
the concrete will be heating the air, and thats why you have a high temperuatre, regardless of if its a good radiation shield enclosure or not
put it somewhere else if you can

Thank you Windy! Is there any website I can go to see a picture on how to install a cabled Vantage Pro...
Cause in my case it will be kind of difficult due to the wires...

How high is the vantage pro above the roof? Can you increase that distance between the concrete and the VP?

humidity is relative
the roof will be a net radiation looser at night and get colder than normal air elsewhere and cool the air above it (especuialy with a flat roof)
in order to keep the same dew point, if the temperature drops, the humidity goes up
solution:
do not mount on a roof

I must say up front, the roof IS NOT the best placement for a temp or humidity sensor.
But, due to circumstances that is where mine is and it works fine. But, my temp and humidity sensor is 20ft above the peak of the roof.

thats what nikoshepared hinted at.,...if it has to be on the roof, get it up as high as you can above the roof
