Why does WD report different dew point?
« on: October 26, 2005, 04:50:02 PM »
Currently my weather station is reporting a dew point of 10degC and WD shows 6.8degC can anyone explain why this is and can I correct the WD display to read that reported by the weather station?
Thamks,
Robert

Are the station console and WD displaying the same temp and humidity? If not then the dewpoint won't be the same either.

Do you have any offset/adjustment set up in WD to change the WD displayed temp or humidity?

Here an online dewpoint calculator http://www.decatur.de/javascript/dew/ you can plug in the temp and humidity displayed on the station and then the same for WD and see what results you get.

My understanding of Dew Point is that it is a calculation of Temperature and Humidity and isn't reported but is calculated by each area separately?

I don't think WD takes any stations dew point reading (the La Crosse doesn't even display one that i am aware of) but calculates it based on the two above data points and the calculation would appear to be different or may be a result of Metric conversions?

I plugged the current temp and humidity values from oldun's WDL into a calculator and get the same result as WD. It's a very standard calculation:

Temp 9.4 c
Hum 85%
=
Dewpoint 7.01 c

WDL displays 7 c

So the station itself must be showing different temp or humidity or it's calculation is broken - and I doubt that.

I just checked my WMR-968 and it was showing the dewpoint at 34.0 and the main screen on WD was showing 34.2 and the website was showing 34.6.

I would guess the OS station sends fahrenheit to WD but WD always stores temps internally in celcius, sends celcius to WDL and both convert the value to whatever is selected for display so there are a number of conversions going on that may cause a decimal point or so difference in displayed values. This difference is well below the accuracy of the measurement themselves. What oldun is seeing is a gross difference of 10degC to 6.8degC so something else is going on with his system.
