Ultrasonic snow depth gauge

I’m working on an 1-wire ultrasonic snow depth gauge based on the following link: http://voksenlia.net/met/snow.php
Dave at Springbok Electronics has been VERY helpful with a new 1-wire interface board that they just started to use. I’ll keep all you “Snow Lovers” updated on the progress. It basically provides a 0 - 5 vdc output based on the depth of the snow. I have the sensor already and am awaiting arrival of the interface board. We had our first snow here today - about 3/4 ".

Excellent. Let us now.

Sounds good, Mike.

I would love to hear how it goes, myself.

I now have all the parts and hope to get it hooked up for testing this week. I see that Steinar has posted some more results of his recent testing with actual snowfalls.

Hope you got enough parts to build one for me too

By the look of it the really clever stuff is done in the data processing, it looks like Steinar uses some sort of “pre-processor” to smooth out the lumps and bumps (if you’ll excuse the pun).

Well I finally got it up and running of a sort. Still indoors while I’m doing the testing and calibration. I have the IButton viewer sensing both the temp and voltage from the A/D converter, but I can’t seem to get WD to read the A/D voltage. It sees the temp fine, but not the voltage. I have email in to Brian and I’ll keep you updated.

yup, i got the email…just a bit snowed under at the moment…

I would be interested in this.

Thanks, Brian

No problem and NO HURRY, just wasn’t sure if you got the eamil. I may have set something up wrong in the 1-wire setup.

As ALWAYS - THANKS !!

The big problem that seems to show up with the ultrasonic snow depth sensors is that they have trouble determining the depth of very dry fluffy snow. My sensor will be mounted much closer to the snow board than Steinar’s was so it will be interesting to see if that affect the sensitivity. Also Nafis in upstate NY has been working with both IR and Ultrasonic sensing so far and I understand is working on a laser measuring system now.

All very interesting.

did you see my replied in the other thread ?

Yes, I did - Thanks

Mikey, try this new versoin
and see if the VAD voltage gets logged under view, WS2010/WS2500 setup
http://www.weather-display.com/downloadifiles/WeatherD.zip
(might take a few minutes to show up)

HI Brian

It’s just showing the 1-wire ROM ID’s under “VIEW” “WS2000 data report”.
Where should the ROM ID for the A/D be assigned in the 1-wire setup ??
The 1-wire setup does see the HUB A and the A/D ROM ID
This is not a priority, we’ll get it sorted out sooner or later, so no hurry. If I can provide any other info, please let me know.

Thanks

:?

hi
put the rom id in the snow input sensor in the 1 wire setup

OK, the Dallas 1 wire setup page shows the A/D sensor ROM ID, but when I paste it into the “Snow Depth Sensor” and “Save/Reset” the 1-wire setup the A/D sensor ROM ID is not allocated.

next to try:
http://www.weather-display.com/downloadfiles/WeatherD.zip
10.37a build 19

i tested here with my 1 wire solar sensor, and it works…showing the VAD
( found my 1 wire USB now…hiding behind something)

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :greenjumpers:

Yes, it is reading the Vad under the WS2000 data report fine ! Also the temp deg C and the Vdd voltage. Also reading under 1-wire setup “leaf wetness/soil mositure/snow sensor” page !! GREAT !!

Thanks !!

Any idea which graph it might show up on ?? I’ll try to get it moved outside tomorrow as we are expecting some snow this week.

AS ALWAYS - THANKS !!

hi
i now have to add it to a graph…hummm…maybe the extra sensor real time graph…
i will do that next…have to the kids to the beach now…
