Best place??
« on: August 05, 2006, 05:25:18 PM »
What is the BEST PLACE to put the transmiter that also dectects Temp and RH?  I have mine about 5 feet off the ground and under a Car tent at the moment.  It is there NOW due to the fact that it was directly in the sun and it was almost 10 deg. higher than it should have been.  I know I am a newbie to all this so I am hoping that the elders in the group can point me in the right direction on some of this.  Thanks to all that have helped so far!  This is great bunch of ppl!

Tell us more about your sensor type. Is it in a solar shield, or is it a bare sensor?
Basics are:
5ft off ground, over grassy surface, min of 50ft from any hard surface or building, in a ventilated and shaded enclosure.

Yes, more info on your station type would help. A radiation shield is your best bet. Under a  car tent in addition to other issues will likely give you higher than normal overnight lows as it would prevent radiational cooling.

Check out a great resource on proper instrument siting from the CWOP folks at:

Hope this helps. :)

I have a LaCrosse WX2315CA.  The sesor has a plastic cap that sits over it.  I think its more for rain protection than anything.  Im just want it to be as accurate as possible.  Hat to be a pain.  As for a "solar" sheild, i dont think that cover does any radiation cooling/protection at all.

You can make a solar shield out of some flower pot saucers and some threaded rod.

Here is a cheaply made aspirated one. Looks pretty good if you ask me.

Thanks so much.  Found the  "Plate Solar" sheild link in the post else where on the forum.  Ran to Wal-Mart and spent all of about $20 to get everything I needed.  Done made it and painted it already.  Will upload a pic of finished product when I hang it.
Now...this creates another question.  Will Adding more phone line like the manufacturer suggests doing make the data be any LESS accurate?  I would assume not on this question.  Will prolly use a little more battery juice though I would assume having a little more resistance to push the data through?  Thoughts?  Thanks again for everything!!  You ppl ROCK in this forum! :D

One more question also.  If I place this unit in the solar sheild and place on top of my 40 foot tower, would that be considered good enough to be far enough away from heat collecting sources?  Such as asphalt and high enough from the roof to keep from getting shingle heat?

Well the goal is at ~5ft, over grass, away from structures and sources of heat. If you can't find a suitable location near the surface then I would go ahead and mount it on the tower. 40ft seems a bit high for a sfc temp reading though. How tall and close is the nearest structure to the tower? Have any pics of your yard/tower to provide?

Because I don't have a good spot for my temp sensor, mine is on a pole 20ft above my roof. That puts it about 35ft above ground. It gives accurate results when compared to ground level temps.
Your mileage may vary.
